Eva Longoria Says Directors, Writers Will “Suffer” as Hollywood DEI Programs Shut Down

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of immersion in the vast universe of virtual entertainment, I find Eva Longoria‘s dedication to DEI in Hollywood truly inspiring. Her relentless pursuit mirrors my own journey in gaming, where I’ve seen the landscape evolve from a predominantly white, male-dominated sphere to a more inclusive and diverse world.

Despite some prominent figures in Hollywood reneging on their previous pledges towards diversity, equity, and inclusion, Eva Longoria continues undeterred in her quest to foster more diversity across the entertainment industry.

The recurring reduction of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives implies a significant impact on the creators involved, as these programs often provide chances in environments where they’re not commonly available,” Longoria pointed out during a chat at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

It’s significantly more challenging for women and people of color to make it big in Hollywood, as it’s not that studio executives explicitly refuse to hire them; instead, they tend to favor those who have the most industry experience.

To put it simply, the well-known actor-turned-film director and producer urged for increased initiatives aimed at enhancing the resumes of individuals from underrepresented groups such as Latinas and women, who often lack opportunities to achieve their aspirations in the film industry.

When it comes to overseeing or creating a project, Longoria often prefers considering an individual’s “potential” instead of merely focusing on their list of accomplishments as indicated by screen credits. According to Longoria, many gifted individuals simply don’t have the same extensive work history.

Therefore, the Eva Longoria Foundation, named after her, prioritizes aiding women, especially Latinas, to strengthen their professional profiles. Meanwhile, in her creative endeavors as a filmmaker, Longoria advocated challenging stereotypes within diverse communities to create and distribute impactful content that resonates broadly.

Sharing narratives from underserved communities can sometimes be challenging, but this area (Middle East) has experienced that firsthand. The filmmakers presenting their works at this festival deserve our admiration for showcasing the stories you see here.

The Red Sea Film Festival continues to Dec. 14.
