Dick Van Dyke Says He’s “Not Afraid” of Dying Ahead of 99th Birthday, Reflects on Life and Career in Coldplay’s New Music Video

As a fan who has grown up watching Dick Van Dyke‘s magical performances, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of admiration and respect for this timeless artist. His life story is nothing short of extraordinary – a man who managed to turn his passion into a lifelong career, one that brought laughter, joy, and inspiration to millions around the world.

Dick Van Dyke reminisces over his distinguished Hollywood journey and personal life, featuring prominently in Coldplay’s music video for the song “All My Love.

In the recently released film, helmed by Spike Jonze and Mary Wigmore, Van Dyke is captured on camera at his Malibu residence, showcasing mementos amassed throughout his career, family, experiences, and love. The video commences with the legendary figure stepping out into his garden, where Chris Martin from Coldplay plays a piano and initiates a song performance.

At a particular point in the video, the former star of “Mary Poppins” ponders the passage of time as he approaches his 99th birthday on December 13, and expresses that he is not fearful of death.

As I ponder my impending fate, I find myself surprisingly unfazed. Despite the fact that each day could potentially be my last, I can’t help but feel a sense of calm assurance, an emotion that seems to contradict my rational intellect. In essence, I believe I’ll be okay.

He expresses gratitude for being able to spend his days pursuing something he’d likely do regardless, which is to play and act foolishly. He considers himself fortunate, given how much he enjoys what he does, even as he dances with his wife. His family is also present in the video.

Whenever I’m called upon to bring laughter, there comes a time when I’m asked to close my eyes and recall all the significant people in my life. In that moment, during one such instance, I jokingly said, “I’m just too old for this; it might cause me to faint and take a quick snooze.

Towards the close of the video, Van Dyke joins Martin at the piano and requests him to impromptu a tune about aging. As Martin starts improvising lyrics, Van Dyke keeps laughing in amazement at his speed and ingenuity. “You captured that on camera! Do you think this guy is real? I can’t believe it! He just composed a song right then and there!

Van Dyke also produces the video with wife Arlene Silver.

On December 13, a compact music video adaptation of the movie will be unveiled as tribute to Van Dyke’s 99th birthday celebration.

This year, at the age of 98, Van Dyke made history by being the oldest recipient of a Daytime Emmy Award. He won the category for best guest performer in a daytime drama series, playing the character Timothy Robicheaux on Days of Our Lives.

Last year, on Van Dyke’s 98th birthday, I got to witness a spectacular variety show called “Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic” that was aired by CBS. It was packed with heartfelt spoken, sung, and dance tributes from numerous stars in his honor. What an amazing celebration!
