As someone who had the pleasure of watching both Bullet Proof and Get Fast, I can confidently say that these movies are a breath of fresh air in the action genre. James Clayton, the man behind the camera, seems to have a knack for creating entertaining, adrenaline-fueled films that don’t take themselves too seriously – a trait that I appreciate as a viewer.
In 2022, James Clayton helmed the production of “Bullet Proof”, his debut feature film. Regrettably, this movie received more than its fair share of harsh criticisms from reviewers. Starring Clayton as The Thief, and boasting the talents of Vinnie Jones, Lina Lecompte, and Philip Granger, the cast united to deliver what I consider an enjoyable, action-filled journey – even though some critics might disagree. Interestingly, two years on, it appears that many viewers share this view, as the film has climbed to the top of the rankings on Paramount+.
According to FlixPatrol, the movie “Bullet Proof” is currently number one on streaming platforms in 18 different countries, including Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and Venezuela. The story centers around the character played by Clayton who attempts the heist of a lifetime when he steals from the ruthless drug lord Temple (Jones). However, an unexpected passenger is found in his escape vehicle – it turns out to be Temple’s wife, Mia (Lecompte), who is pregnant.
I found ‘Bullet Proof’ to be less than stellar, but compared to other choices one might have while dozing off on the couch following a heavy night of drinking, it’s not the worst pick.” Leslie Felperin from The Guardian expressed this in her review. As for understanding the movie title ‘Bullet Proof’, I must admit, I’m no match for those who get it. Critic Dennis Schwartz echoed similar sentiments. Julian Roman from MovieWeb suggested that it should be viewed as a straightforward B-movie actioner, and to that, I can only agree – there’s nothing inherently wrong with that assessment.
What many of its harshest detractors overlook is that “Bullet Proof” is a self-aware action movie that doesn’t claim to be anything more than it is. As actor, director, and co-writer, Clayton understands the boundaries of his skills (and budget) in this debut project, yet still manages to serve up 81 minutes packed with raw excitement, all while infusing a generous dose of humor that has become synonymous with action films like this one.
‘Bullet Proof’s Sequel Is Even More Fun
What many folks don’t know – but will hopefully discover – is that Bullet Proof recently got a sequel that was released on Nov. 15 titled Get Fast. Like its predecessor, the film is also directed by Clayton, who once more stars as The Thief. This time around, he’s joined by the phenomenal Lou Diamond Phillips and newcomer Suleiman Abutu, who add a lot of heart to the high-octane sequel, which sees Clayton and Abutu team up to rescue his partner (the returning Granger) from a ruthless drug lord and her charming hitman (Phillips).
In an interview with MovieWeb before its premiere, Clayton mentioned that while filming “Bullet Proof,” he hadn’t anticipated his character would appear in a sequel until he started editing and discovered the possibility for additional tales situated within the same cinematic universe as his initial movie.
During the production of “Bullet Proof,” it marked my first time directing a film, leaving me clueless at the beginning. It wasn’t until we began editing and I started observing how the movie was taking shape that I realized, ‘Ah, it has substance. Perhaps it’s time for me to consider creating a sequel.’
Regarding The Thief’s future, Clayton hinted that there are plenty of opportunities for the characters to reappear. In the meantime, don’t miss out on catching either Bullet Proof or Get Fast this weekend, as they are now available on all Video On Demand platforms within the U.S. If you’re looking for some fun entertainment!
