As a gamer who has spent countless hours navigating virtual worlds, I can’t help but draw parallels between Lance Bass‘s journey and my own quests. Just like him, I’ve faced obstacles that seemed insurmountable, only to find a way forward. His story of resilience in the face of adversity is one that resonates deeply with me.
Lance Bass is looking back at how his coming out affected his professional career at the time.
During his appearance on the “Politickin” podcast, the ex-member of NSYNC (who identified publicly as gay in 2006), mentioned that he had been preparing to shoot a pilot for The CW network around that time. But upon announcing his sexual orientation, things took an unexpected turn.
At that moment, I was working on a sitcom for The CW, preparing to film our pilot episode. However, just as we were about to proceed, they informed us that the show could no longer go on. They explained that it was essential for me to convincingly portray a heterosexual character, which they believed would be difficult if I’m not straight in real life.
He explained, “Each casting director I was acquainted with would say something like, ‘Lance, we’re unable to cast you due to the fact that your fame associated with being gay is too prominent now. They can no longer see you as anything else but that.’ Consequently, I lost everything.
Reflecting on his public coming out in a People magazine cover story in 2006, Bass characterized it as a “frightening, chaotic experience” because all the instances he had witnessed of people coming out, particularly in entertainment, seemed to imply that it was detrimental to one’s career. He reminisced about his attempts to break into television or acting after NSYNC, during which time he appeared in the 2001 romantic comedy film On the Line, co-starring with fellow NSYNC member Joey Fatone and Emmanuelle Chriqui.
Bass admitted that appearing on the cover was a nerve-wracking choice, as he felt that the media was about to expose his identity. He made this decision because he only had 24 hours before a story about him would be published and printed. He mentioned that although the situation has since improved, back then, people in the industry distanced themselves from him and gave off an air of uncertainty, as if they were unsure how to handle him.
Reflecting on the situation, I found it necessary to hit the reset button and give myself a fresh start, along with a new brand. Although I’m someone who doesn’t harbor resentment, I must acknowledge that casting directors have since expressed remorse for their past actions and apologized sincerely.
Bass reminisced about the period when NSYNC disbanded, confessing that he hadn’t laid a solid foundation for his success by pursuing solo projects or seizing career chances, as he was hoping for the group’s reunion instead.
He stated, ‘I was indeed perplexed. Being so young, I had limited understanding, and NSYNC was all I recognized. It was my universe, and I was content it was mine. I believed this would remain my universe throughout my lifetime.’
Bass expressed that it became perplexing for him when the group disbanded since he felt uncertain about his place and wasn’t thriving due to being in a state of waiting. He further mentioned that it took some time for him to understand his identity and determine his path.
The boy band got back together to perform “A Better Place” – their first joint piece in more than two decades, which was featured in the movie “Trolls Band Together”. Furthermore, they also collaborated with Timberlake on a track titled “Paradise” for his album called “Everything I Thought It Was“.
Regarding potential gatherings of the group in the future, Bass hinted mysteriously, “Something seems to be brewing that we’re trying to decipher… We’ve been brainstorming about possible futures and ideas for what we might accomplish.
