As a lifelong aficionado of all things Yuletide, I must say that Netflix’s 2024 holiday movie lineup has been nothing short of a delightful feast for my festive heart. However, if I were to pick one film that truly stole the show, it would undoubtedly be “Our Little Secret” starring the inimitable Lindsay Lohan.
Though Hallmark churns out more Christmas movies annually than Netflix, the streaming giant didn’t skimp on star power this holiday season. Actors like Lacey Chabert, Christina Milian, and Chad Michael Murray made their way to Netflix, with Murray even showing off his abs in “The Merry Gentlemen.” As a devoted Christmas movie enthusiast, I watched them all, but Lindsay Lohan’s newest holiday production, “Our Little Secret,” was the standout for me, securing the title of Netflix’s best holiday movie of 2024 — in my humble opinion.
In a heartwarming rekindling of old love, the movie “Our Little Secret” revolves around former best friends turned exes, Avery (Lindsay Lohan) and Logan (Ian Harding), who unexpectedly find themselves spending Christmas together upon learning that their respective partners are siblings. Initially intending to act as if they don’t know each other, the situation becomes intricate when Logan offers to assist Avery in winning over the family’s persistent matriarch, Erica (Kristin Chenoweth), in return for her help with a significant construction business proposal.
Well, you might be wondering if this movie isn’t quite in the spirit of Christmas, but trust me, it’s packed with festive scenes. In fact, I wouldn’t call it Netflix’s top holiday pick for 2024 if it didn’t deliver on that front. Frankly, I can’t stand movies that don’t capture the essence of a classic Christmas film.
Amongst the four Netflix holiday movies launched this year, “Our Little Secret” stands out as the one with the most Christmas spirit. Not only does the story unfold throughout the festive season, but it features numerous Christmas-themed events such as Logan and Avery going to a Christmas tree farm to choose their family tree, a comical staging of the Christmas Story in Church, and a chaotic Secret Santa gift exchange.
Apart from its charming portrayal of the holiday season, what truly sets Our Little Secret apart as my top pick this year is its exceptional cast performances and moving narrative. It’s no surprise that Lohan showcases her comedic prowess in this film; her knack for humor was brilliantly displayed throughout the movie. From the deception of concealing her relationship to tricking the local vet into covering for Erica’s dog after allegedly eating all the house cookies, you’ll find yourself laughing consistently.
Initially, I was hesitant about Netflix’s “Meet Me Next Christmas,” but it unexpectedly proved to be a delightful holiday movie.
At about the middle of the movie, things become quite emotional when Avery temporarily exits Erica’s home to pick up keys for her childhood house, which her father has asked a realtor to sell during the holidays. Naturally, Logan goes with her. As they enter the now-empty living room, where his proposal was once rejected, it stirs up painful memories for him. However, despite this emotional baggage, he stands by Avery as she cries over the renewed pain of losing her mother a decade ago, and how the sorrow seems just as raw now that her father is selling the house.
Normally, I don’t get tearful watching Christmas romance films, but this time, there were definitely tears streaming down my face. Fortunately, that emotional moment didn’t linger for long as things took a turn when secrets everyone in the family had been hiding were unexpectedly revealed during our annual Secret Santa tradition, plunging us back into the tumultuousness.
The film isn’t flawless; I must acknowledge that the peculiar oil painting family portraits served as an intriguing side plot that didn’t align perfectly with the movie’s overall mood. Additionally, I craved more intimate scenes between the dynamic duo, Lohan and Chenoweth. Nevertheless, when compared to the other three Christmas romances Netflix released this year, Our Little Secret undoubtedly takes the top spot.
Critics may not have taken a liking to Lohan’s latest partnership with Netflix, but I certainly did. And as a self-proclaimed connoisseur of made-for-TV Christmas movies, I think my opinion holds more weight. You can stream Our Little Secret now with a Netflix subscription, and don’t forget to check our 2024 Christmas movie schedule so you don’t miss out!
