As a horror enthusiast with over two decades of unnerving experiences under my belt, I must say that the lineup for 2025 is as chilling as a midnight stroll through an abandoned cemetery. From the return of familiar faces to brand new entities that promise to give us nightmares for years to come, these upcoming horror sequels and spin-offs are sure to keep our collective hearts racing.
2025 promises to be an exciting year for horror enthusiasts as Hollywood continues its fascination with sequels, much like millionaires and diamonds. The “Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Friday the 13th” series are just a few examples of how these franchises keep evolving through reboots, spin-offs, and new installments. Yet, it’s not only established franchises that will receive updates; upcoming years may also see continuations for some very recent hits. So, be prepared for the unexpected – if a story was popular, Hollywood seems eager to explore further possibilities, even if the original story concluded sensibly. If there’s an opening, more stories are likely to follow.
2025 promises a plethora of excitement as classic series make comebacks, beloved universes are revisited, and new chapters unfold in blockbuster franchises – all brought to you by familiar characters that send shivers down your spine. Here’s a rundown of the horror sequels set for release in 2025.
28 Years Later: Part 1 (June)
As a die-hard fan, I can’t contain my excitement about the return of the movie that revitalized zombie films and catapulted several talented actors into the limelight – “28 Days Later.” This iconic franchise is set to make a comeback as a trilogy, with the first part hitting theaters in 2025. The original director, Danny Boyle, will be at the helm for this exciting new chapter, while Alex Garland, the brilliant mind behind the initial film, has penned the script. I can hardly wait!
In the upcoming movie, actors Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, and Ralph Fiennes are taking on undisclosed roles. According to remarks made by Ralph Fiennes to Deadline, the story revolves around a young boy trying to find a cure for his ailing mother. During their journey through Northern England, they encounter a doctor who could potentially help them. The journey is fraught with obstacles as they must navigate or eliminate numerous zombies, as the rage virus continues to haunt England 28 years post-outbreak. The film promises to deliver chills and excitement when it hits theaters on June 25th.
M3GAN 2.0 (June)
It’s quite pleasant to have a friend, isn’t it? The popular dancing doll, once just a meme sensation rather than a successful box office hit, is coming back in 2025 with an entirely new appearance. In the first movie, her plastic exterior underwent a (literal) meltdown, and this has led to a redesign for the toy. Vanity Fair has shared an exclusive sneak peek of her, and her design bears a strong resemblance to the initial film, although her face appears more mature upon initial observation.
Beyond the initial sneak peek, the details for “M3GAN 2.0” are being tightly guarded. However, it’s confirmed that Violet McGraw and Allison Williams will reprise their roles as M3gan’s former best friend Cady and her aunt, Gemma respectively. Jenna Davis will continue to lend her voice to M3gan. Brian Jordan Alvarez is set to recur as Cole, while Jen Van Epps plays Tess. The newcomers in the cast include Ivanna Sakhno, Timm Sharp, Aristotle Athari, and Jemaine Clement. Akela Cooper returns to pen the script, with Gerard Johnstone resuming his role as director. As a dedicated fan, I can’t wait to see what unfolds!
Fans must hold their excitement until summertime as M3gan’s comeback concert is now set for a July Fourth release, with the film being officially moved to June 27th. The initial January debut has been postponed and is now part of the hotly anticipated summer blockbuster lineup.
I Know What You Did Last Summer (July)
It appears that someone has discovered the secret from Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and Julie’s (Jennifer Love Hewitt) mysterious summer in the ’90s, as depicted in “I Know What You Did Last Summer”. The movie shares its name with its original and the 2021 reboot, maintaining continuity with the first two films. However, a new set of teenagers will soon encounter The Fisherman’s infamous meat hook. “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is penned by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Sam Lansky, based on a screenplay by Leah McKendrick, with Robinson also taking up the director’s role.
Hewitt (currently in talks to rejoin) and Prinze Jr. seem set to reappear as their characters who were once entangled in a complex romance. Additionally, they will be joined by Madelyn Cline, Billy Campbell, Chase Sui Wonders, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols, Gabbriette, and Jonah Haur-King in the cast of “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” As of now, no specifics about the plot have been disclosed. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on July 18th.
The Conjuring: Last Rites (September)
The upcoming movie titled “The Conjuring: Last Rites” may mark the conclusion of the main storyline featuring characters Ed (played by Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine (portrayed by Vera Farmiga). However, it’s important to note that the Conjuring universe isn’t ending entirely. The lore surrounding Ed and Lorraine’s cursed artifacts is still expected to inspire films such as those based on “The Nun” or Annabelle the Doll. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick penned the script for “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” with contributions from Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing, while Michael Chaves takes on directing duties.
Although the specific plot is still under wraps, it appears that the story will be drawn from the actual case files of the Warrens. Additionally, it seems that the couple, portrayed by Farmiga and Wilson, will remain steadfast in the face of unspeakable evil. Joining them in this chilling tale are Mia Tomlinson as their daughter Judy, Ben Hardy, and Miko Hughes. The Conjuring: Last Rites is scheduled to hit theaters on September 5.
Saw XI (September)
Are you up for playing another round, or would you prefer to discuss something else? The “Saw” franchise has had its fair share of challenges, including a seven-year gap that ended with the release of “Jigsaw” in 2017. Since then, installments have been coming at a faster pace, and now “Saw XI” is nearly here. The movie will feature a screenplay by Marcus Dunstan, and will be directed and co-written by Kevin Greutert. While specifics about the plot are still under wraps, Dunstan hinted to Bloody Disgusting that fans should expect a sharp and meaningful film. Producer Oren Koules mentioned to SFX (via GamesRadar) that there’s a strong possibility the movie will be set in Mexico, where we last saw John Kramer (Tobin Bell), who did not manage to escape before “Saw X” concluded. (“Saw X” is known for stepping outside of the series’ timeline to provide audiences with a midquel that takes place between the first and second films.)
Only Tobin Bell, who plays the unforgettable character of Jigsaw, has been confirmed to reappear in the cast at this point. The eleventh installment of the “Saw” franchise, titled “Saw XI,” is due to be released on September 26th in cinemas.
Black Phone 2 (October)
The lesser-known yet captivating movie titled “The Black Phone” delves into the chilling events that unfold when a sinister child murderer known as The Grabber (portrayed by Ethan Hawke) invades a peaceful suburban Colorado town. A teenage boy named Finney (played by Mason Thames) finds himself ensnared by this menacing figure, and must struggle to maintain his mental stability and survive, with the help of the ghostly apparitions of The Grabber’s past victims. In “The Black Phone 2,” we can expect most of the original cast members to reprise their roles, including Hawke, Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and Miguel Mora. Demián Bichir will join the cast as well. The screenplay for the sequel is being penned by C. Robert Cargill and Scott Derrickson, with the latter also returning to direct again.
Without any spoilers revealed as of now, fans of the series don’t need to wait much longer to discover the consequences should they choose to answer a call. The release date for “The Black Phone 2” is set for October 17.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (December)
Prepare to shine your torches and wind up your music boxes; a sequel to the cinematic adaptation of “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is on its way! According to series creator Scott Cawthon, who shared this news with Bloody Disgusting, the movie will follow the plot of “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2,” the game that introduces Balloon Boy and delves further into the franchise’s mythology. Josh Hutcherson is set to reprise his role as Mike Schmidt, while Matthew Lillard will return as his antagonistic counterpart, William Afton.
Hutcherson assures us that the upcoming sequel will push boundaries even further, as new types of mechanical characters are being introduced and the world expands significantly. He shared this with Esquire, hinting at the anticipation among fans who recognize that several animatronics from the sequel video games have yet to make their debut in the film universe.
It seems likely that the upcoming sequel, “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2”, set to release on December 5, will shed light on what became of Afton, who was last seen in his Spingtrap Freddy outfit, slowly dying, and Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail), whose fate after the movie events left her in a coma. Will their stories be resolved? We’ll find out when we join the Fazzbear crew for the holidays next year.
Final Destination: Bloodline (TBD)
A new unfortunate group of people who don’t know each other are soon to learn the hard way that you can’t cheat death, as “Final Destination: Bloodlines” is being made. This means a whole bunch of fresh faces will find themselves in danger from intricate and deadly machines designed by none other than the Grim Reaper, who they failed to outsmart. The script was penned by Lori Evans Taylor and Guy Busick, with Jon Watts, and it’s set to be directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein.
In this production, you’ll find Brec Bassinger, Teo Briones, Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Richard Harmon, Anna Lore, Owen Patrick Joyner, Max Lloyd-Jones, Rya Kihlstedt, and Tinpo Lee. The release date for this chapter is expected in 2025, although the exact date for the movie has not been announced yet. Producer Craig Perry shared on Facebook that the series’ 20th anniversary is approaching, and he aims to release it around that time as a special celebration (as reported by Bloody Disgusting).
Thread: An Insidious Tale (TBD)
“Thread: A Magical Detour” veers away from the primary “Insidious” saga, offering viewers a fresh perspective within the “Insidious” universe. Unlike previous films which primarily revolve around a family’s ongoing struggle against malevolent spirits, this installment delves into the intricate world of magic, second chances, and meddling with the past. The film features Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani in leading roles, with Jeremy Slater directing, who is also responsible for writing the screenplay.
In the upcoming movie titled “Threads: An Insidious Tale”, due for release in 2025 (as of now, no specific date), we follow a pair of characters portrayed by Moore and Nanjiani. Using magic to journey through time, they find themselves in their past. Seizing an opportunity to revive their deceased daughter, the couple embarks on this journey but the outcome isn’t as anticipated. As chaos unfolds in the distinctive style reminiscent of “Insidious”, audiences can expect some unexpected twists and turns.
They Follow (TBD)
In the film “They Follow,” Jay Height (Maika Monroe) has a considerable fanbase, and soon, horror enthusiasts will discover if the mysterious entities that have been dogging her ever cease to pursue her permanently. It appears that the story takes place 10 years into the future, focusing on how an older Jay is managing life after her ex-boyfriend betrays her by sleeping with her in order to transmit The Entity. This malevolent force persistently haunts its victims until they meet their end, unless the victim transfers it through a sexual encounter.
As of now, there isn’t much additional information available about the movie. However, Monroe appears quite enthusiastic about it. In an interview with IndieWire, she shared, “I know that David [Robert Mitchell] wouldn’t embark on a sequel unless it was going to be phenomenal, and the script is simply fantastic.” She added, “I can’t get enough. I’m just so eager to reprise my role as Jay and discover where her character will take us – it promises to be remarkable.
The upcoming movie titled “They Follow” is being helmed by Mitchell, the same director from the original, with a planned release date in 2025.
