- We May Be Closer to an ‘Edge of Tomorrow‘ Sequel
- Doug Liman and Tom Cruise’s Next Project Goes Deep
As a long-time movie buff who’s seen more than a few alien invasions and time loops, I can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu about the potential return of ‘Edge of Tomorrow.’ This film, with its clever premise and gripping action sequences, has been stuck in limbo for far too long. But recent developments have given me a glimmer of hope that we might finally get to see Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt dance the time loop waltz once more.
The long-awaited follow-up to the sci-fi action movie “Edge of Tomorrow,” titled “Live Die Repeat and Repeat,” has been eagerly anticipated by its fans since its announcement in March 2019. However, due to a series of setbacks, the project has found itself stuck in a perpetual state of limbo. Delays have been attributed to Tom Cruise’s busy schedule with the Mission: Impossible franchise, Emily Blunt’s consistent scheduling conflicts, and Director Doug Liman’s desire to only return to the project when he feels genuinely excited about the script.
From a business perspective, while Edge of Tomorrow gained a devoted fanbase, Warner Bros. deemed its box office success as ‘modest’, generating $370.5 million on a production budget of $178 million. This has led to some reluctance in backing large-scale projects without a surefire payoff. Much like World War Z, Edge of Tomorrow experienced a slow rise due to uncertainty. However, there’s good news for fans of Edge of Tomorrow – the future might hold promising developments.
We May Be Closer to an ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Sequel
In September 2024, Netflix made Edge of Tomorrow available on their platform, allowing those who didn’t catch it in theaters another chance to watch it, and providing a rewatch opportunity for fans. This has revitalized discussions about the movie due to its streaming success, and has drawn attention to this highly-acclaimed film, which currently boasts a remarkable 91% Fresh rating and 90% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The recent agreement between Cruise and Warner Bros, as reported by the L.A. Times, indicates that their partnership will result in more films together. This arrangement seems to be more substantial than just hype, allowing Cruise to pursue personal projects alongside those for Warner Bros. Excitingly, Tom Cruise is joining forces with Doug Liman once again for a new production, even though it’s not a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow that fans have been eagerly anticipating.
Doug Liman and Tom Cruise’s Next Project Goes Deep
As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve been eagerly waiting for news about the supernatural thriller “Deeper,” penned by Max Landis and stuck in development for quite some time now. First unveiled back in 2016, it faced delays due to several factors, one of which was the controversy that surfaced around Landis in 2019 (as reported by Variety). However, it’s with bated breath that I share the latest update: Doug Liman has confirmed the project is back on track with Warner Brothers, and none other than Tom Cruise will be stepping into the lead role.
Although the SpaceX project, tentatively named and partially set in space, remains uncertain, it seems that “Deeper” is progressing. Being associated with Warner Brothers is a positive sign for the future of Live Die Repeat and Repeat, particularly if the film proves financially successful for the studio. Details about the release date for Deeper are yet to be decided. However, the concept of a suspenseful, supernatural thriller involving an astronaut exploring the ocean’s abyss has already sparked excitement among fans, potentially paving the way for another Edge of Tomorrow sequel. In case you missed it, Edge of Tomorrow is currently available for rental on Prime Video.
