- ‘Skeleton Crew’ Is Meant to Be Pure and Simple ‘Star Wars’ Fun
As a long-time Star Wars enthusiast who has followed this epic saga since its humble beginnings, I must say that “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” is a delightful breath of fresh air. Growing up, I remember the excitement and joy each new Star Wars installment brought to my life, and it seems that this series captures that same essence perfectly.
The new Disney+ series titled “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” has just been released, and there’s no denying the strong sense of nostalgia it evokes, which is actually a good thing. Far from being a flaw, this nostalgic feel is part of what makes this series a must-watch for viewers of all ages. Although some critics have criticized the show for being somewhat generic and uninspiring, nothing could be more incorrect. The casting is spot on, which is no small feat when children are the main characters in the series, and it undeniably has the most authentic Star Wars feel compared to other recent projects within the franchise.
The content manages to embody the essence that makes Star Wars remarkable without getting entangled in the political undertones of ‘good versus evil’ or ‘Jedi vs Sith’. Essentially, it’s all about thrilling adventures, which is exactly what made countless people become enamored with the Star Wars universe when they were young.
Instead of focusing on typical characters within the “Star Wars” franchise, the new series, “Skeleton Crew”, presents a unique perspective by revolving around four spirited youngsters: Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Neel (Robert Timothy Smith), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), and KB (Kyriana Kratter). In an exciting turn of events, these kids stumble upon a hidden starship in the woods, only to be lost in hyperspace. This series caters to a younger audience while maintaining engaging content for adults, evoking the warm sentiments that older fans remember from their childhood. As such, “Skeleton Crew” serves as an excellent choice for parents who are avid “Star Wars” enthusiasts to share with their children. The show is rich in references to previous “Star Wars” adventures and offers a delightful dose of nostalgia in the most enjoyable way possible.

In its initial two episodes, the series Skeleton Crew boasts numerous connections to past Star Wars productions. For instance, the brutal boarding of a cargo ship at the start mirrors the opening scenes of “A New Hope” where Darth Vader (James Earl Jones) assaults Princess Leia’s (Carrie Fisher) vessel. Additionally, the character Wim, prior to school, engages in playing with Jedi and Sith figurines – a scene that resonates with many viewers. Moreover, a memorable drink from the Star Wars universe, blue milk, is part of his breakfast on this particular day, an item now available for purchase at Galaxy’s Edge in Disney World, Florida, and Disneyland, California.
When they meet up, it’s obvious that Wim and his friend Neel are engaging in a lightsaber duel, much like what Star Wars fans may have done as kids, and still do today. In truth, Wim is just like any other passionate Star Wars fan, having been enamored by the series since he was a child and continuing to be so as an adult. His casual use of “wizard” to describe something cool is reminiscent of Anakin Skywalker in The Phantom Menace, who also used that term. The next day, right before Wim stumbles upon what he thinks is a hidden Jedi Temple, he races through the forest at breakneck speed, evoking memories of the speeder chase on Endor from Return of the Jedi for the viewers.
In the second episode of the show, viewers might have spotted a small link when the group arrives at Port Borgo, a place brimming with questionable characters. One of these pirates, Vane (played by Marti Matulis), who tries to capture Wim and Neel, is actually a character carried over from another series, The Mandalorian. This character, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) encounter in the third season of The Mandalorian. Although this connection is subtle, it hints that other characters might show up. Whether or not this happens remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: Skeleton Crew aims to bring delight to its audience as they recognize the numerous references and nods to other Star Wars productions. In essence, this series is designed to offer pure, unadulterated fun for Star Wars enthusiasts.
‘Skeleton Crew’ Is Meant to Be Pure and Simple ‘Star Wars’ Fun
With so many fans of Star Wars, crafting a show that pleases everyone isn’t a simple task. However, Skeleton Crew manages to tap into the nostalgia of Star Wars in a way that makes the series enjoyable and entertaining, making it a worthwhile viewing experience. With the franchise growing so vast since Disney acquired it, there are countless paths for the stories it wants to tell. Nowadays, Star Wars encompasses various movies, shows, merchandise, theme parks, and more. Lastly, providing viewers with a light-hearted series that focuses on the fun elements of the Star Wars universe outside the Skywalker saga is a refreshing change for fans.
In contrast to the intense and emotional storylines found in shows like Andor and The Mandalorian or movies such as Rogue One, Skeleton Crew offers a lighthearted, nostalgic experience that is simply fun. This series is just one piece of the Star Wars universe, fulfilling its intended purpose effectively. While it may not revolutionize the franchise, it doesn’t need to, and it doesn’t aim to be groundbreaking. Instead, Skeleton Crew delivers a carefree viewing experience that doesn’t demand deep contemplation. And there’s nothing wrong with that; it’s just straightforward Star Wars fun for fans to relax and enjoy. Tune in every Tuesday on Disney+ for new episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
