As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours in the darkness of cinemas, I must say that the upcoming lineup of action sequels is truly exhilarating! The adrenaline-pumping tales of survival, heroism, and fantastical battles are sure to captivate audiences worldwide.
One great action movie calls for another, a principle Hollywood has consistently followed for many years. This is evident through the numerous adventures of James Bond and the various Rambo sequels that have graced our cinemas. If an action flick with fights and violence performs well at the box office, there’s now a standard blueprint for how to maximize its potential across multiple sequels. The upcoming 2025 movie lineup in theaters is expected to continue this trend with style. A variety of action movie sequels, ranging from large-scale to more intimate stories, are scheduled to premiere in theaters throughout the year. Some have already started extensive promotional campaigns to capitalize on the existing affection for their predecessors among audiences.
2025 will see a diverse array of action movie sequels gracing multiplex screens. Some boast veterans from this genre as leading stars, while others introduce fresh talent making their debut in main action roles. These sequels range from immediate follow-ups to past successes, to long-awaited productions that have been brewing for years before hitting the silver screen. Despite their varying backgrounds, they all highlight Hollywood’s penchant for maximizing profits from popular action films. So buckle up and stay alert; it’s time to delve into the most exciting action movie sequels set to hit cinemas in 2025!
Den of Thieves 2: Pantera
Fans who adored 2018’s “Den of Thieves” have been eagerly waiting for a sequel, and finally, their patience will be rewarded: “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” is set to premiere in cinemas in January 2025. Once again at the helm as writer/director is Christian Gudegast, with Gerard Butler reprising his role as Nicholas “Big Nick” O’Brien. This time, Big Nick pursues master thief Donnie Wilson (O’Shea Jackson Jr.), who has made his way to Europe. In this installment, the dynamic between these former adversaries shifts significantly as Big Nick expresses weariness from his role as a hunter. Instead, he breaks away from traditional law enforcement and teams up with Wilson for an elaborate new heist, marking a departure from their previous roles.
Similar to most films following Gerard Butler’s work post-“300”, the upcoming movie “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” appears brimming with exhilarating action sequences. Previews hint at cars somersaulting from steep cliffs, detonations, and a tense dinner scene between Big Nick and Wilson featuring some firearm exchanges. Beneath these actions lies the recurring theme of Big Nick’s loyalty, as the audience ponders whether this former cop has truly embraced the criminal underworld or if his past pursuits were merely professional obligations. The intricate web of trust between Donnie Wilson and Big Nick remains a central point in the “Den of Thieves” series, reflecting the complex moral ambiguities prevalent in today’s society. As always, these themes will be presented amidst fisticuffs and gunfire. Fans eagerly awaiting this sequel won’t be disappointed, especially given the extended wait.

Captain America: Brave New World
If you’re yearning for a more earthbound adventure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Captain America: Brave New World” is set to deliver. Following on from the three solo Captain America films and the Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, this movie is said to be a more down-to-earth production, although it does feature a colossal Red Hulk and ties in with “Eternals”. In this installment, Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson will be adjusting to his new role as Captain America, while Harrison Ford’s Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross takes office as U.S. President. As he navigates his presidency, a peculiar plot begins to unfold around him that may involve the supporting character of Samuel Sterns from “Incredible Hulk”. In this fresh world, Wilson must decide who he can trust.
The marketing strategy for this upcoming film heavily underscores gritty and intense action sequences, showcasing the ominous figure of Seth Voelker/Sidewinder (Giancarlo Esposito) in close proximity to explosions and exhibiting a menacing demeanor. Although you might have overlooked some intricate details in the trailer for “Captain America: Brave New World,” the promotional materials thus far have highlighted high-octane aerial conflicts involving Captain America and his iconic wings, along with captivating fight scenes. Previous standalone “Captain America” films such as “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” are renowned for their exceptional action sequences within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If “Brave New World” delivers on its earthbound promises, it’s sure to keep fans of action movies on the edge of their seats without breaking a sweat.

The Accountant 2
In 2016, Ben Affleck made his debut as Bruce Wayne/Batman in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” His portrayal of the character garnered a dedicated following but also sparked divided opinions due to its role in a highly controversial blockbuster. However, it’s worth noting that Affleck was also featured in another action movie released that year – “The Accountant” – where he played Christian Wolff, an original action movie protagonist with autism. Remarkably, this film turned out to be a box office success and was the most rented movie of 2017 across physical and digital platforms. Since then, frequent airings on cable TV stations have further boosted the popularity and fanbase of this Affleck character.
Over the past few years, there have been discussions about a second installment of “The Accountant” in Hollywood, but it seemed like it might never come to fruition. However, it looks like the project is now moving forward as planned! Ben Affleck will reprise his role as Christian Wolff, and Jon Bernthal will be back as his brother, Braxton. While specifics about the plot are still under wraps, original director Gavin O’Connor is returning to ensure continuity between the two films. Amazon MGM Studios has even set a spring release date for this sequel, with intentions to debut it on Prime Video streaming. With talk of “The Accountant 3” already in the works, it seems that we may not have seen the last of Christian Wolff on our screens next year!

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
As a gamer, I’m pumped about the first trailer for “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.” It seems like this could be the ultimate conclusion of the Tom Cruise saga as Ethan Hunt and his crew. So far, the trailers have been heavy with talk about the end drawing near, and they’ve hinted at some massive apocalyptic stakes for our mission. Even Luther, one of my favorite characters, says “I don’t regret anything,” which makes me think that this might be his, or maybe even the franchise’s, swan song. But let’s not forget, “Mission: Impossible” movies are famous for Tom Cruise doing death-defying stunts, and I’m sure the next one will take it to a whole new level.
In the upcoming trailer for “The Final Reckoning,” audiences are treated to a tantalizing glimpse of intense, high-stakes action sequences. Expect to see our protagonist, Hunt, braving icy waters extensively. The fray is not limited to land, as fistfights and kicks are interspersed with thrilling airborne combat scenes. Strikingly beautiful biplanes painted in vivid hues grace the sky, creating a breathtaking contrast against the sunlit backdrop. One particularly gripping moment showcases Hunt clinging for survival off one of these planes. For action enthusiasts, the promise of experiencing this confrontation on an IMAX screen is more than enough to spark anticipation. If you’re still uncertain, perhaps knowing that “The Final Reckoning” could mark the climax of the epic “Mission: Impossible” saga might seal the deal.

From the World of John Wick: Ballerina
In the finale of “John Wick: Chapter 4,” the character John Wick (portrayed by Keanu Reeves) experiences an irreversible fate – death and burial. However, in the world of Hollywood, a profitable franchise is hard to extinguish completely. As a result, this storyline persists through a spin-off titled “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina,” which takes place between the third and fourth movies. The main character in this installment is Eve Macarro, played by Ana de Armas. Similar to the previous lead character, she seeks revenge, but her target is her slain father. Skilled not only in ballet dancing but also in combat, Macarro embarks on a quest for an epic vengeance in “Ballerina.
3 years before the initial trailer for “Ballerina” was released, Ana de Armas was already cast as Macarro in this action movie sequel. This suggests a lengthy and complex journey towards completion. Reports claim that additional reshoots were carried out under the guidance of Chad Stahelski, director of the original “John Wick” film, following unsatisfactory test screenings. However, Stahelski downplayed these reports, stating he merely enhanced the action scenes to match the hand-to-hand combat fans have come to expect from previous “John Wick” movies. Fervent followers of this series are hopeful that “Ballerina” will uphold the franchise’s respected legacy.

Jurassic World Rebirth
Life finds a way… and so do extensions of lucrative franchises. Though there are countless reasons we’ll likely never see a “Jurassic World Dominion” follow-up, the action-packed “Jurassic Park” saga continues with next summer’s “Jurassic World Rebirth.” A decade after “Jurassic World” debuted and pushed in a new era focused on fresh protagonists, “Rebirth” is now preparing to shift focus to another crop of previously unknown lead characters. The production will follow Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) and her team colliding with a shipwrecked family whilst trying to reach especially important dinosaurs for a pharmaceutical company. This saga’s storytelling norms suggest lots of chase scenes and humans getting gobbled up by dinosaurs will ensue.
This upcoming movie, titled “The Creator,” is directed by Gareth Edwards, who brought us “Godzilla” (2014) and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (2016). In his latest film, he delves into thought-provoking themes like AI, evil, and the robo-apocalypse. Yet, he’s also known for creating action sequences that leave a lasting impression, such as Donnie Yen’s fight scenes in “Rogue One” and the final battle in “Godzilla.” Given his track record, he seems an excellent choice to continue the blend of spectacle and intelligence characteristic of the top “Jurassic Park” installments. What sets it apart is that it’s one of the few 2025 action movie sequels promising dinosaur destruction. And with Mahershala Ali starring, it adds an extra layer of uniqueness in the tentpole cinema scene of 2025.

The Naked Gun
2025 is set to bring mostly intense and serious action movie sequels. For those who prefer a more humorous take on action sequels, get ready for the return of the “Naked Gun” series, inspired by the “Police Squad!” TV show. Regrettably, the talented Leslie Nielsen has passed away, but Liam Neeson steps into the role as Frank Drebin Jr. in this new movie. Notable actors like Pamela Anderson, Seth MacFarlane, and Paul Walter Hauser are among the star-studded cast. However, the name that should truly grab people’s attention for the upcoming “Naked Gun” film is director Akiva Schaffer.
As a diehard fan, I’d like to share my excitement about the involvement of Jorma Taccone, a comedic genius from The Lonely Island crew, in directing the upcoming “Naked Gun” film. With his past successes like “Hot Rod” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” and his keen understanding of action movie-making demonstrated through his work on “Saturday Night Live’s Digital Shorts,” I have high hopes for this project.

Nobody 2
2021’s film “Nobody” centered around Hutch Mansell, a suburban family man played by Bob Odenkirk who had a secret past as a government assassin. Peace had finally settled into his life, but danger re-emerged. The movie ended with Mansell overcoming the villains of that story and seemingly returning to peace – though a hint of further violence was left for the future. “Nobody 2” is set to continue Mansell’s journey as he encounters new obstacles. Joining the cast for this sequel are Timo Tjahjanto, who will direct, Sharon Stone as the main antagonist, and Colin Hanks, Chris Pine, Mckenna Grace, and John Ortiz – all adding to the “Nobody” universe.
Details about the plot are sparse, but it’s almost assured that “Nobody 2” will be a thrilling action movie. The original film, “Nobody,” earned praise for its intense gunfights and physical combat scenes, which resonated with both action enthusiasts and casual viewers. What truly set this movie apart, however, was Odenkirk’s authentic portrayal of the everyday man as the main character. Even though his character was skilled in fighting, Odenkirk always emphasized Mansell’s ordinary nature. If this element is maintained in “Nobody 2,” then the sequel could potentially strengthen rather than tarnish the original film’s reputation.

Tron: Ares
Fans have been eagerly anticipating a sequel to the 1982 classic sci-fi film “Tron,” starring Jeff Bridges as a computer programmer who gets trapped in a mainframe. The long-awaited continuation, “Tron: Legacy,” was released in 2010, offering stunning visuals but leaving some viewers puzzled by the plot. Disney executives are hoping that the next installment, titled “Tron: Ares” and due out soon, will be a hit both critically and financially. In this new chapter of “Tron,” the digital character Ares (played by Jerod Leto) ventures into our world on an important mission, leading to unexpected interactions between the real world and the digital realm. Joining Jeff Bridges, reprising his role as Kevin Flynn, are several newcomers: Greta Lee, Evan Peters, and Jodie Turner-Smith.
Long-term “Tron” enthusiasts might feel a sense of disillusionment about a new installment set outside the Grid. Yet, the possibility of blending real-world elements with characters and settings from the Grid could result in breathtaking action scenes if director Joachim Rønning taps into his creativity. What’s more, this “Tron” sequel will boast an original score from Nine Inch Nails, which alone sparks excitement. Given the long wait, dedicated “Tron” fans are eager for any hint of action-packed scenes in this universe, but whether it can match the original remains to be seen.

Mortal Kombat 2
2021’s “Mortal Kombat” has received praise from some fans, but it garnered mixed opinions from both critics and audiences. In 2025, there’s an opportunity for the franchise to address past criticisms with “Mortal Kombat 2,” a sequel that promises improvements based on feedback from the first film. Director Simon McQuoid returns after his directorial debut in the initial movie, and the original cast members are set to reprise their roles. Newcomer Karl Urban will also be joining the cast as the beloved character Johnny Cage, who was previously portrayed by Linden Ashby in the 1995 “Mortal Kombat.” Fans are excited to see Urban breathe new life into this iconic character, adding his star power to the action-packed sequel of 2025.
The R-rating confirmation for “Mortal Kombat 2” undeniably stirs excitement among fans of the video game series, assuring them that the intense gore from this year’s “Mortal Kombat” won’t be toned down in the sequel. There are whispers that “Mortal Kombat 2” will showcase some jaw-dropping deaths, suggesting that the creators are aiming to take it up a notch. Despite the disappointment many felt with the reboot, particularly regarding the script, there’s much to look forward to in “Mortal Kombat 2.” It might just deliver the high-octane video game action movie experience fans have been yearning for.

Greenland: Migration
It’s quite possible that the movie “Greenland” slipped past you unnoticed, given that it was released in 2020 when everyone’s attention was primarily on the COVID-19 pandemic rather than the latest Gerard Butler films. Nevertheless, this disaster/action film starring Butler as a structural engineer named John Garrity managed to earn enough money abroad to warrant a sequel titled “Greenland: Migration.” According to Variety, the movie’s plotline goes like this: “In the movie, the Garrity family, who had sought refuge in a Greenland bunker following the destruction of Earth by comet Clarke, now have to take a perilous journey across Europe to find a new home.
As a gamer, I’m genuinely hyped! The action-packed movie “Greenland” has been receiving rave reviews, even for a Gerard Butler flick, which is quite unexpected and awesome. Plus, with an impressive budget of $90 million, we’re in for another visually stunning spectacle, directed by the talented Ric Roman Waugh, who’s known for his work on the original film. This sequel is being distributed by Lionsgate, a studio that could really use a success after a series of underperforming releases – “Borderlands” tanked at the box office and Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” has been mired in controversy. If things go well with “Greenland: Migration,” there might even be a third installment!
