As a die-hard fan of the ‘Pretty Little Liars‘ series, I simply can’t contain my excitement when it comes to discussing the enigmatic character that is Alison DiLaurentis. Now, let me tell you, having grown up in Rosewood myself, I’ve heard my fair share of town gossip, and I can say with absolute certainty that this girl has been through some serious drama!
For approximately the initial three and a half seasons of the popular TV show “Pretty Little Liars,” the plot revolves around solving a single mystery: Who was responsible for Alison DiLaurentis’ death? When Alison vanished during her first year in high school, her pals Spencer, Emily, Hanna, and Aria mourned her loss. After their separation following her disappearance, they were reunited at the start of their junior year when Alison’s corpse was discovered beneath her parents’ gazebo. Additionally, the girls faced unsettling messages and ordeals at the hands of an enigmatic, malevolent entity known as “A.
In the small town of Rosewood, Alison’s unsolved murder case was casting light on every hidden truth, while ‘A’ continued to stalk them relentlessly. Over a period of one and a half years, equivalent to three and a half seasons of “Pretty Little Liars,” Spencer, Emily, Aria, and Hanna tirelessly worked to uncover Alison’s fate and reveal the identity of ‘A.’ With so many twists and turns, it became challenging to keep track of events and timelines. However, before the series finale, the mystery surrounding Alison’s death was successfully resolved. Here’s a summary of what actually transpired.
What really happens to Alison in Pretty Little Liars
In “Pretty Little Liars” Season 2, Episode 13 titled “The First Secret,” we delve into Alison’s activities leading up to her death. This episode reveals that Alison was the initial target of ‘A’, receiving threatening messages and texts much earlier than any of her friends. Through old letters, videos, and acquaintances known by Alison before her disappearance, the liars piece together clues suggesting that Alison was on a mission to unmask ‘A’ herself. It has since been revealed that ‘A’ was none other than Mona Vanderwaal, a student who was previously unpopular and bitter.
In the second season of “Pretty Little Liars,” it emerged that Mona was character A. On the night of Alison’s sleepover with the other girls, Mona, in a bid to kill Alison, struck someone else with a shovel instead, unintentionally. Although another individual inflicted injuries on Alison, she was found by Mona at a nearby motel and tended to. Mona assisted Alison in escaping Rosewood before she could be targeted again. Alison remained hidden from her friends and family, who believed she had been kidnapped and then killed. It came as a surprise to the girls when they learned that Alison was still alive, but not so much to those who had followed the hints throughout the series.
So, who killed Alison Lauren DiLaurentis?
Initially, the characters in “Pretty Little Liars” came up with several guesses about who murdered Alison DiLaurentis across the first three seasons. At one point, they suspected Ian, a problematic boyfriend of Melissa’s, might be involved since he secretly filmed the girls and flirted with both Spencer and Alison. They also considered Melissa, as she discovered their relationship and wasn’t pleased. The thought that Alison’s brother Jason, who had been played by Parker Bagley but later replaced by Drew Van Acker, could have attacked her in a fit of anger crossed their minds. Additionally, they speculated that Ezra, who was discovered to have met Alison before she passed away, may have been the culprit. At one point during Season 3, the group almost convinced themselves that Aria’s father, Byron, could be responsible after he was threatened with exposure of his affair. However, it is important to note that nobody has ever been definitively proven to be Alison’s murderer on the show.
Thankfully, none of the theories were valid since Alison wasn’t actually killed. Instead, her sibling Charlotte, unknowingly, struck her on the head with a shovel, thinking she was someone else due to their similar clothing. When their mother saw this, she attempted to shield Charlotte by burying Alison, not recognizing that she was still alive. Mrs. Grunwald, a clairvoyant named Mrs. Grunwald, discovered Alison and helped her escape town discreetly with assistance from Mona, who was later revealed to be A.
Who actually died the night Alison went missing?
Alison’s sibling, originally known as Charles but who later transitioned to female identity, was named Charlotte. Despite their father’s wish to isolate Charlotte in Radley Sanitarium due to her gender transition, Charlotte’s mother continued to show affection and would frequently provide duplicate clothing items and gifts for her daughter, similar to what she gave Alison. One of Charlotte’s friends at the sanitarium, Bethany, borrowed one of Charlotte’s outfits and followed her when Alison went missing on the night that she was last seen wearing an identical dress. Sadly, it was this very outfit that Bethany had borrowed that caused confusion as it matched what Alison wore during her disappearance.
In the dark, I stumbled upon two girls resembling each other quite a bit – Alison and someone else, let’s call her Bethany. Since they were dressed alike, it was easy to mistake one for the other. Thinking it was Bethany I intended to cause harm to, I ended up hitting Alison instead, poor girl, with a rock on her head. Unbeknownst to me, Bethany had actually planned to harm Alison that very night. Alison managed to survive my blow, but unfortunately for Bethany, she crossed paths with Mona, who thought she was Alison and whacked her in the back of the head with a shovel. Mona abandoned Bethany, leaving her for dead. Melissa found Bethany lying unconscious and, thinking it was Spencer who had attacked her, took matters into her own hands and buried Bethany alive, under the impression that she was Alison all along.
How Alison is different in the Pretty Little Liars books vs the TV show
In the TV series “Pretty Little Liars,” Alison’s dishonesty stands out as her most prominent flaw, a trait that can also be attributed to the character in the books. However, beyond this shared characteristic, the two versions of Alison are quite distinct.
In the books, Alison initially takes on the role of A and meets a premature end after Mona steals her identity as A. Alison in the novels is the principal villain throughout the series. However, in the television show, A’s identity changes frequently and eventually Alison returns to her friend group; she even marries Emily and adopts twin daughters with her. The Alison on screen appears to be a blend of Courtney and less malicious aspects of the book character, Alison. Some viewers believe that bringing the book Alison to the screen would have created one of the most memorable TV antagonists ever, as suggested by Redditor u/Kirbo300. “If only book Alison had been shown,” they wrote, “what a lasting legacy that would have been!
