Tyler Mitchell’s ‘Wish This Was Real’ Lands in Helsinki

As a seasoned gamer who’s traversed countless virtual worlds, I can confidently say that stepping into Tyler Mitchell’s solo exhibition at The Finnish Museum of Photography feels like stumbling upon an immersive, high-definition RPG, where every frame is a new level to explore.

At age 29, Tyler Mitchell has garnered acclaim from prominent figures in the art and fashion world. For his Nordic introduction, he is showcasing a solo exhibition titled “Wish This Was Real” at The Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki, extending until February 23, 2025. Curated by Brendan Embser and Sophia Greiff, this exhibition features approximately ten years of Mitchell’s work, centered on themes of aesthetics, fashion, utopia, and the environment that emphasize stories about Black existence.

The exhibition is divided into three main themes, showcasing portraits taken in various locations such as the United States, Europe, and West Africa, as well as his newer works featuring fabrics and mirrors. The sections titled “Lives/Liberties” delve into the spirit of youth, using portraiture to examine identity, while “Postcolonial/Pastoral” focuses on natural landscapes as a backdrop for heartwarming images of families enjoying simple pleasures. Lastly, “Family/Fraternity” evokes feelings of power and aspiration as Mitchell delves into the impact of presentation in capturing the essence of the Black family unit.

Mitchell muses, “I wish my photos convey sincerity. Photography, in essence, is about capturing instances of community, relaxation, peace, and happiness amidst challenging circumstances, and for me, as an American, this frequently involves depicting a tumultuous past.

Every scene in the series “Wish This Was Real” showcases a self-illuminated universe unique to itself. In this visual journey exploring camaraderie and bonding, Mitchell imbues everyday instances with his distinctive aesthetic flair and keen appreciation for subtle nuances.
