Sam Klemick's Wooden Chairs Evoke Surreal Softness at Objective Gallery's Design Miami Booth

As a design enthusiast with a penchant for the extraordinary, I must say that Objective Gallery’s exhibition at Design Miami 2024 left me utterly captivated! The title “All design is contemporary, if it’s alive” resonates profoundly, especially when faced with such vibrant and lively pieces.

At Design Miami 2024, Objective Gallery in Shanghai and New York chose the title “All design is contemporary when it’s vibrant.” This title mirrors the sentiments of painter David Hockney and reflects the essence of their exhibit, which features collectible designs that radiate life through their intricate craftsmanship and artistic vision.

Crafted from repurposed Douglas Fir timber, Sam Klemick’s colossal Wooden Bell Chairs were strategically placed at the heart of the gallery’s setup, anchoring the space with their substantial gravitational presence. These chairs offer a fresh take on Klemick’s iconic designs, centered around a robust wooden structure meticulously handcrafted.

Lately, Klemick has been presenting different variations of her chair, each sporting distinct wood finishes and adorned with repurposed fabrics ranging from vintage floral jacquard patterns to patchworked textile remnants. But at Design Miami, the designer displayed a chair crafted using her signature trompe l’oeil techniques. Klemick possesses an extraordinary talent for imbuing her wooden pieces with the essence of soft fabrics, creating one-of-a-kind sculptural works that deceive the eye. Her latest creations, the Big Wooden Bell Chairs, build upon previous designs such as the Sweater Chair and Ribbon Light, taking these ideas to new heights in terms of visual impact and volumetric effect.

The pair of chairs complement the palpable sense of formal individuality and textural naturalism running throughout the exhibition. Klemick’s work sits across from Luke Malaney’s irregular Trampoline Table and James Shaw’s whimsical Modular Mechanics Chair. Elsewhere, English designer Charlotte Kingsnorth’s Spider Lamp appears to stand with a life of its own, boasting hairy yellow legs and a flower-like shade. Jeff Martin’s Sarcophagus 11 table stands on the opposite wall, combining ribbed stoneware tiles in varying glazes with moments of surprise provided by deviations in form.

Established in 2020 by interior architect and art dealer Chris Shao, Objective Gallery grew from its origins in Shanghai to open a branch in New York City not long after. With a focus on the burgeoning market for collectible design, the gallery has been leading the charge in the “new wave of art furniture,” showcasing designers, artists, and craftspeople who are innovating and redefining functional objects.
