As a long-time fan of “Fire Country,” I must say, this current love quadrangle has me feeling like I’ve stumbled into a soap opera set in the wilderness. It’s a rollercoaster ride that’s leaving me dizzy and questioning my loyalty to the show.

Fans of “Fire Country” anticipated that Gabriela Perez (Stephanie Arcila) would part ways with Bode Leone (Max Thieriot) in a dramatic fashion, but they didn’t expect her journey towards self-renewal to unfold quite like this. Instead of embarking on a new life as they had imagined, she finds herself isolated – struggling with debt from her unsuccessful wedding and her father’s backlogs, grieving the end of her relationship with Bode, living in a run-down trailer, hurting herself while free-diving off a cliff, and causing great concern for Sharon Leone (Diane Farr). Meanwhile, Bode has been showing interest in the newly single Audrey James (Leven Rambin).
In an unexpected twist in the show, Gabriela finds herself having a drunken encounter with her former steady Jake Crawford (Jordan Calloway) in Smokey’s parking lot. This action seems like retaliation or yet another indication that Gabriela is losing control over her life. This move comes as quite a surprise, especially considering the hints at an affair between Gabriela and Cam Casey (Jared Padalecki), Bode’s supervisor, in “Fire Country”. Regardless of who it involves, a love quadrangle – now possibly a pentangle – is not something fans are excited about seeing unfold during Season 3 of the series. Fans are already tired of this complicated relationship dynamic and are hoping for a swift resolution to the situation.
Fans are irritated by all four parts of this love quadrangle
It’s clear that many supporters of “Fire Country” are displeased, to put it mildly, about Gabriela sleeping with Jake. On the subreddit dedicated to the show, there’s been a lot of criticism towards her for this move, with some fans even suggesting she should be written out of the series. As u/Comfortable-Talk-946 pointed out, they question why the writers would revisit the conflict between Jake and [Bode] over Gabriela when it’s been addressed before. With Gabriela having slept with both Bode and Jake within a short timeframe, fans are concerned about potential future plotlines involving paternity disputes.
Some supporters argue that Gabriela’s actions are not typical of her due to her current mental state, as u/Confident-Map-8868 expressed: “Clearly, she’s not herself… They’re trying to address the mental health issue, but these writers can’t seem to do it without compromising the character.” Other viewers view this as a temporary obstacle on the path to Bode and Gabriela reconciling.
However, numerous viewers express dissatisfaction towards “Fire Country,” as they feel the show is becoming excessively romance-focused. Since the Season 2 finale, some fans have grown disgruntled, and their frustration doesn’t seem to subside. Now, a significant number of viewers are contemplating leaving the series due to these romantic plotlines. They attribute this dissatisfaction to the show’s creators and writers, claiming they are pushing them away. What steps can be taken to regain their interest?
How Gabriela’s downward spiral might be good for the show
Here’s something of a radical statement about the whole Gabriela-Bode-Jake-Audrey mess — it might just be the best possible thing that could have happened to “Fire Country.” Gabriela’s downward spiral, for all of its stereotypical notes, also gives the show a chance to write a unique storyline about the rigors of depression, something that doesn’t often happen in prime time. To do it with a Latina character is also a fresh twist on such a story.
Jake and Gabriela seem to share a more straightforward, less complicated relationship compared to Bode and Gabriela. Although it’s clear Jake still harbors feelings for Cara, perhaps it would be best for him if he moves on – and who better than someone familiar like Audrey? After all, the connection between Audrey and Bode appears to be more amicable than the tumultuous relationship Gabriela and Bode have always known.
