As FBI: International's Newest Agent, Jay Hayden Tells Us About His Future On The Fly Team And Filming That Surprisingly Silly Scene With Jesse Lee Soffer

As a seasoned gamer and fan of crime dramas, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement as I delve into the world of FBI: International. The addition of Jay Hayden to the Fly Team is a fresh breath of air, bringing along with him the promise of intrigue and unpredictability. His character, Agent Tyler Booth, is not your average by-the-book agent; he’s got that devil-may-care attitude that makes you question his every move, which I find utterly captivating.

Spoilers ahead for Episode 7 of CBS’ FBI: International Season 4, called “Keen as a Bean” and available streaming now with a Paramount+ subscription.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about the latest addition to the Fly Team in FBI: International. The newcomer, Jay Hayden from Station 19, has joined the expansive Dick Wolf TV universe as Agent Tyler Booth. In his debut episode, things got heated when a mission to capture a Most Wanted criminal took a personal turn; the villain targeted his daughter back home in the States. Even Jesse Lee Soffer’s character hinted at some baggage that fans are eagerly anticipating uncovering.

Hayden discussed with TopMob his potential appearance on CBS’ “FBI” show for the 2024 TV lineup, detailing the amount of screen time he might get in Season 4 as well as the climactic virtual golf scene involving Tyler and Wes towards its conclusion.

How Much Fans Should Expect Of Tyler Booth

Initially, it appeared that Tyler Booth would return to the U.S. after wrapping up the current case, but the FBI Deputy Director proposed a 90-day stint on the Fly Team with Wes, giving him time to decide his future career move. The friends engaged in some discussion, with Wes trying to clarify who was in charge during their mission in Budapest. However, Wes assured Tyler that he was completely fine with him staying put.

Initially, it was anticipated that Jay Hayden would appear frequently on the fourth season of FBI: International, following his casting announcement. However, there was no assurance that he’d still be part of the show when the 2025 TV lineup began. After I inquired about his decision to join International shortly after the cancellation of Station 19, I wondered about the extent of Tyler Booth’s presence as Season 4 progresses. In response, he hinted:

He’s going to appear in quite a few upcoming episodes, possibly many more. I might return at some point, but that’s as much as I can share for now!

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that the upcoming episodes in Season 4 will feature more of Agent Tyler Booth than we might initially expect! While the exact number of his appearances in this season isn’t explicitly stated, it’s clear that we can look forward to seeing him quite frequently. Post the winter break, starting from January, his presence is certainly set to dominate our screens. In fact, even next week’s fall finale won’t mark the end of his journey with us. Hayden himself hinted at this during our conversation, mentioning that the character was pitched as someone who was intended to stay around for a while.

In our conversations about this character and his actions on the program, it was consistently planned that he would make an appearance, pursuing another individual who was once his partner with Wes. There’s a complex past between them, not all of it favorable. Furthermore, we intended for Tyler to linger for a while, which is beneficial because it could create internal conflicts within the team, as he doesn’t always adhere to the rules. His presence might not be the most positive influence on Wes Mitchell.

At first, Wes didn’t take much interest in adhering to all the rules set by the Fly Team, which made Jesse Lee Soffer refer to his new character as a persistent nuisance for Smitty at the outset. However, it’s now Jay Hayden’s character whose habit of bending the rules might stir up some disagreements. The actor from Station 19, speaking further, said:

Furthermore, there’s also the issue of whether Tyler is aware that Wes holds the leadership position within this team. If Tyler is part of the group, he should abide by the rules, correct? This factor will play a role as well. As future situations involving Wes become increasingly personal, how might Tyler respond to these events? Given the character of Smitty, who serves as more of a moral compass, can you imagine her as such, and in this context, is Tyler more like the antagonist?

In the fictional scenario where Smitty represents an angel figure and Tyler embodies a devilish one, Wes succumbed to a temptation leaning towards Tyler’s ways in “Keen as a Bean,” by disregarding Smitty’s advice about involving local authorities repeatedly. As Season 4 unfolds, it will be intriguing to observe if this decision has any consequences for Wes and how the storyline develops further. The preview for the season finale hints at potential harm coming to a member of the Fly Team.

Instead of diving straight into potential troubles that might arise next week, let’s reminisce about Tyler and Wes enjoying a friendly game of virtual golf as we wrap up this episode!

Getting Goofy With Jesse Lee Soffer

Jay Hayden and Jesse Lee Soffer have been friends off-screen since before they started working on Station 19 and Chicago P.D., dating back to the early stages of their acting careers. Their camaraderie extends beyond the set, as evidenced by their shared enthusiasm about collaborating together. The final scene where their characters were seen playing virtual golf served as a testament to their on-screen friendship.

When I spoke with the Fly Team newcomer, though, I had to. ask: was the banter between the characters a product of Wes and Tyler or Jesse and Jay? Hayden explained:

Man, they nailed the writing on that scene! They had to reel us in a bit, we were having such a blast during the golf part, it was like a non-stop party! [laughs] And then they had to remind us, “Alright guys, let’s get back to the script.” That golf scene felt so much like our real camaraderie, except in real life Jesse outswings me by miles. Let me tell you, he hates it when my character outperforms his on screen, it really gets under his skin.

It seems Jesse Lee Soffer may not have had to demonstrate his acting skills extensively when Wes showed surprise that Tyler’s golf shot outperformed his. My suggestion is that the core issue in their relationship might stem from golf-centric issues, and Hayden agreed with this perspective.

Absolutely! [chuckles] Indeed, when you witness Tyler outpacing him, it seems as if their friendship might be shattered beyond repair.

Setting humor aside, it seems that Tyler and Wes have more pressing matters to attend to than debating golf skills. Previously, Soffer hinted at Hayden’s character being involved in a storyline featuring the return of Greg Czonka, who was instrumental in Wes’ partner’s demise during Season 4’s premiere. The trailers for upcoming episodes offer a glimpse into the challenges that the Fly Team is currently grappling with.

Don’t forget to catch CBS on December 17, Tuesday at 9 p.m. Eastern Time for the fall finale of FBI: International, where Jay Hayden and Cameron Vo seem to be in a dangerous situation with a gunshot wound! As usual, International will air between FBI at 8 p.m. ET and FBI: Most Wanted at 10 p.m. ET. And if you can’t wait for the TV broadcast, you can stream all the episodes of the current season on Paramount+ right now!
