David Harbour's 'Violent Night' Sequel Gets Positive Update

As a long-time fan of Christmas movies and action films, I can confidently say that “Violent Night” has become one of my favorite holiday season gems. Having grown up watching Santa Claus as the jolly, gift-giving figure, it’s refreshing to see David Harbour bring a grittier, more realistic take on the character.

David Harbour, famed for his role in “Stranger Things” and recently known for playing an unusual Santa Claus in “Violent Night,” is hinting at the reappearance of that character in a future film. With his latest hit animated TV series “Creature Commandos” garnering success, Harbour has spoken about the prospect of a sequel, and all signs point to positive developments.

In a chat with ComicBook, Derek Harbour discussed the animated adult series “Creature Commandos,” where he lends his voice to Eric Frankenstein. This show premiered on Max recently, featuring Derek alongside Sean Gunn, Alan Tudyk, and Indira Varma. James Gunn plays both showrunner and writer for each episode. However, the talk veered towards one of Derek’s standout films – “Violent Night.” When asked about a potential sequel to “Violent Night,” Harbour expressed readiness to reprise his role.

It seems like we share the same fondness for that film. In fact, I believe Universal felt the same way too. Consequently, we’ve been putting some effort into making it happen, so stay tuned!

I do think there’s some very talented people working on it, so yeah, I’m excited about it.”

Currently, the actor has a packed schedule, as he juggles various projects. As we anticipate updates on “Violent Night 2,” he’s got plenty on his plate. In addition to reprising his role as Jim Hopper in the final season of “Stranger Things,” which is expected to air in 2025 on Netflix, he’s also diving into the world of superhero franchises. His Marvel Cinematic Universe film, titled “Thunderbolts,” is slated for release next year, where he will reprise his character, Red Guardian, often referred to as the Russian equivalent of Captain America.

In the movie “Violent Night”, John Harbour takes on the role of Kris Kringle, more famously known as Santa Claus. Contrary to the typical image of a cheerful, holiday-loving Santa, this character is depicted as an alcoholic who’s grown weary of his annual routine. On this particular night, instead of delivering gifts as usual, he finds himself in trouble when he stumbles upon a hostage situation at a mansion. Amid the chaos, he notices a child with a unique Christmas wish that captivates him. Thus unfolds an unusual tale where Santa Claus tries to bring some Christmas cheer amidst adversity.

The movie, titled “Violent Night,” is packed with intense action scenes and humorously incorporates supernatural elements. This blend of action and comedy was a massive hit at the box office, earning over $76 million. Critics also seemed to appreciate the film, giving it a 74% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Many praised Santa’s portrayal by Harbour as one of its strongest aspects.

Among Christmas films that cleverly mix with other genres, “Violent Night” is nearly top-tier. Its over-the-top violence and unique twist on Santa’s cheerful demeanor are just a couple of the many reasons why this movie is an enjoyable watch annually for those who prefer a diverse selection of films during the holiday season. Although it isn’t a traditional Christmas horror film, it successfully provides some excitement during the festive period.
