Douglas Booth Reveals Terrence Malick's "Torpedo" Style Ahead of New Film

As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the upcoming films from Terrence Malick have me absolutely thrilled. Twenty-five years after his triumphant return to filmmaking, the master storyteller is still pushing boundaries and captivating audiences with his unique style.

Twenty-five years have passed since Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director, made his comeback to movie making with “The Thin Red Line”. Even now, this tireless artist continues his work, as a cast member of his upcoming project shared with MovieWeb. Entitled “The Wind’s Path“, this film draws inspiration from scripture and boasts an esteemed ensemble (Mark Rylance, Ben Kingsley, Joseph Fiennes, Aidan Turner). As is common with all of Malick’s productions, a rising star, Douglas Booth, is also part of the cast. In a recent interview, Booth shared insights about the distinctive approach to filmmaking by director Terrence Malick.

He’s an exceptional director, a joy to collaborate with. However, I can’t divulge my role in the movie as it’s highly confidential. I admire his approach and his preference for maintaining privacy over the project.

However, here’s what I can share: His work style is quite distinct, unlike anything I’ve encountered before. He predominantly uses natural light, moves the camera fluidly, and values the flexibility of the script. His aim is to produce authentic, genuine moments. In his own words, he refers to this approach as ‘torpedoes.’ Essentially, he tries to catch you off guard in a scene, resulting in something unexpected yet organic and real.

Speaking from personal experience, this individual possesses an unending vitality, always on the hunt for captivating moments, whether they involve you directly or are fleeting instances caught off-camera like a plane passing overhead or a bird in flight. What truly sets him apart is his heartfelt spirit, which radiates even beyond the filming process. For instance, after completing audio recordings with him, I’ve always received a handwritten thank-you note, detailing our session together. He’s truly one of a kind, and working with him was an immense honor for me. I eagerly await the release of this film to see how it all unfolds. Although my role in it is relatively minor, there are numerous talented actors involved, and I hope everyone finds joy in it. I believe we’re nearing the end of production now.

As reported by The Film Stage, actor Géza Röhrig (portraying Jesus in “The Way of the Wind”) shared that the film’s central conflict revolves around Peter urging Jesus to engage politically against Roman oppression, which Jesus declines. Furthermore, Röhrig disclosed that no miracles will be depicted in the movie, giving it a more realistic feel. Additionally, he noted that director Terrence Malick initially intended to create the film in the 1990s with Disney and a substantial budget, but abandoned the project when the studio refused to let him have final editing rights; instead, he went on to produce “The Thin Red Line.

Skeet Shooting With Patrick J. Adams

For now, fans of romantic comedies have something to look forward to as Booth stars in “Young Werther,” releasing this week. This fresh take on the genre presents an intriguing love triangle involving his character and equally charming leads Alison Pill from “Star Trek: Picard” and Patrick J. Adams from “Suits.” Keep an eye out for a side-splitting scene where Adams’ daring character Albert introduces Werther to skeet shooting, humorously illustrating Werther’s inexperience in the sport.

Booth shared with us that he’s had experience with clay-pigeon shooting, specifically skeet shooting. He clarified that although he was a vegetarian for 12 years, he never hunted animals like pheasants. As for the clays, he found it entertaining. Regarding the scene, Booth mentioned that he brought his initial ignorance to it and had a good time. He recalled feeling quite goofy that day, and the producers seemed to think he should tone it down a bit while he was enjoying the scenery.

Starting this Friday, Lionsgate presents “Young Werther” in theaters, as well as for digital and on-demand viewing. You can choose to rent or purchase it from various digital platforms such as YouTube, Google Play, Amazon Prime Video, Fandango Now, and Apple TV via the link provided below.
