As a child of the ’90s, last night’s Saturday Night Live episode was like a trip down memory lane for me. Chris Rock and Adam Sandler brought back the good old days when SNL was all about goofiness and irreverence. It felt like they never left! I mean, who could forget Chris Farley and David Spade? And let’s not forget Jimmy Fallon… but that’s a story for another time.
Last night, Chris Rock resurfaced at Studio 8H for a fresh stint as host on Saturday Night Live, marking his first appearance since 2020. To the sheer joy of fans, he was accompanied by an old workmate – none other than Adam Sandler. Although Sandler wasn’t officially credited for the episode, during a medical sketch around halfway through, the patient’s covering was removed to reveal Sandler. The crowd erupted with jubilation, and it didn’t take long before all cast members were grinning as the sketch spiraled into absurdity.
The main concept revolved around a surgical procedure. At first, Sandler was undergoing an appendix removal, but due to Sarah Sherman’s nurse mistakenly recording gallbladder instead, Chris Rock’s surgeon operated on the wrong organ. She admitted her error promptly, but during surgery, one of her AirPods accidentally fell into Sandler’s chest. As events unfolded, Sandler eventually regained consciousness, and chaos ensued as he started bleeding profusely, leaving everyone in disarray. You can witness the mayhem below…
In an unusual manner, this drawing effectively captures why the Adam Sandler and Chris Rock period of SNL was so dearly appreciated during the 1990s. These two, alongside other beloved figures such as Chris Farley and David Spade, injected a significant amount of silliness and disregard into the show. While it’s true that there were political sketches and more serious topics addressed, what stands out most in people’s minds is the camaraderie and fun they shared on screen, frequently breaking character to create memorable moments.
I’m not implying that Sandler and Rock are the most egregious offenders in the show’s history, considering Jimmy Fallon is also part of it. However, you can find numerous sketches from the early ’90s where the cast members appear to be struggling to maintain their composure. This review adds another chaotic sketch to that collection, as the latter half of this one borders on pure madness.
Sandler is simply the most recent addition to the lineup of nostalgic returns this season, which has been filled with fan favorites like Maya Rudolph and Andy Samberg, who collaborated on election sketches, and more recently, Dana Carvey and David Spade teamed up for a Church Lady sketch. All these appearances are part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the beloved comedy show.
Next week, we’ll keep feeling that nostalgic wave as Martin Short, another ex-cast member, takes over hosting duties. Joining him will be Hozier, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what unexpected delights they might bring along.
