I Rewatched Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, And I Need To Talk About Why I Hated It This Time

As a lifelong fan of all things Burton and Keaton, I have to confess that my initial enthusiasm for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has waned significantly since my first viewing. While it’s no secret that nostalgia can often cloud our judgment, I must admit that I was blinded by it during my initial watch.

SPOILER ALERT: Here’s a heads-up for fellow gamers: The following discussion might reveal some key plot points from the movie ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’. If you haven’t watched it yet, tread with caution before diving in. Stay ghostly!

People frequently alter their feelings towards movies over time. Often, they discover aspects they appreciate in films they initially disliked after revisiting them years later. Conversely, a long-cherished movie might not resonate the same way once they grow older. However, my opinion about the movie “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” shifted remarkably within just three months.

Reflecting on it now, I find myself puzzled as to why I’m not enjoying the 2024 movie sequel as much as I did when I first saw it in September, which was a great follow-up to one of Michael Keaton’s best films in my opinion. This sudden disappointment has led me to realize that my future viewings of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” might be the last for me.

Why I Think I Enjoyed Beetlejuice Beetlejuice The First Time

I have been a fan of director Tim Burton’s original 1988 horror-comedy movie classic Beetlejuice for, literally, as far back as I can remember. My love and appreciation only increased in recent years after my wife and I spent our first Halloween together dressed as the titular bio-exorcist and Miss Argentina. I showed up for my screening of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice wearing that very same striped suit, riding high on the hype for the sequel that was fueled by nostalgia and star Michael Keaton’s enthusiastic praise of it in the press.

After putting all these components together, I had a blast with the sequel, thanks to its skillful application of practical effects, stunning visual design of new parts of the afterlife, and, most notably, Keaton’s delightful reprisal of the role he’s always held dear in my heart. However, despite appreciating these aspects, they no longer shine as brightly due to elements that have become major annoyances for me.

Why Rewatching Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Disappointed Me

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been keeping tabs on the feedback for the game Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. It’s clear that several aspects have been pointed out as potential drawbacks. For instance, the narrative seems to speed through its myriad of storylines towards a tidy ending in the climax, despite a rather leisurely beginning. Monica Bellucci’s performance as Betelgeuse’s wife, Delores, while amusing at times, doesn’t seem to add much to the overall plot.

It’s surprising, but when I initially watched the film, I was well-aware of these criticisms and even discussed them in an analysis of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, highlighting both its improvements and flaws. However, my love for the original and excitement for this sequel led me to overlook them at first. But upon rewatching, these issues became increasingly apparent and even irritatingly obvious, making me eager for the movie to conclude.

The Lesson I Learned From Rewatching Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Revisiting Beetlejuice Beetlejuice brought back fond memories initially, making me feel like I would have carried on thinking I liked it, while accepting its shortcomings. Yet if I hadn’t rewatched it, I might never have noticed those flaws. However, having a second look with expectations in mind, those imperfections stood out more clearly, negatively affecting my overall appreciation of the movie.

Initially, I’m grateful that I re-watched it (thankfully without buying it), as it helped me learn to be less attached to my nostalgia and accept when a sequel or remake of a beloved story might not resonate with me entirely. In the past, I may have been more lenient with certain titles for similar reasons, but going forward, I aim to approach things from a more impartial perspective and focus on the overall picture rather than personal biases.

If you’re still a fan of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” or are intrigued and want to watch it, you can find it with a Max subscription starting December 6, 2024. But personally, I suggest revisiting the original instead. Fortunately, my fascination for that movie hasn’t worn off yet.
