As someone who has witnessed Will Smith‘s career evolution over the years, I must say that his resilience and ability to learn from past mistakes is truly commendable. The incident at the Oscars was undoubtedly a low point for him, but it seems like he has taken this experience as an opportunity for introspection and growth.
Approximately two years ago, Will Smith made headlines for slapping Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards. As a result, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences imposed a ten-year ban on him attending their events. In the time since, there were questions about his professional future, but he’s managed to rebound. Although Smith has moved past that moment in his life, it remains one of the most difficult experiences for him. He recently shared his thoughts on what made the slap so agonizing and also discussed what lessons he took away from the situation.
The actor who played King Richard has been keeping quite busy these days, focusing on promoting his fresh new music. In between all that, he recently paid a visit to San Diego’s Observatory North Park theater. During this performance, the high-profile figure touched upon several topics (and addressed the memes about Diddy that have been circulating). Later, as shared by @SKTheKingYT on X, the star of Bad Boys opened up about the consequences of the slap and described how he coped with the incident.
Following the Oscars, I had a moment of intense excitement, if you catch my drift? … I was swept off my feet for a bit, but I’ve returned. … Over the course of a few years, I took time to deeply introspect and determine who I am and who I aspire to be. Then, quite unexpectedly, around six months ago, music began flowing out of me again, as if I had an abundance of fresh ideas and messages I wanted to share. It was like – the words and melodies were the only way I could articulate the complex emotions swirling within my heart.
Will Smith slapped Chris Rock after the comic made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Rock made a quip about Pinkett Smith’s baldness, which is due to alopecia areata, leading Smith to smack the comedian and later yell expletives at him. Later on, the Smith apologized to Rock in a video, while Rock himself blasted both of the Smiths in his 2023 Netflix comedy special, Selective Outrage. A number of other comedians, including Jim Careey Wanda Sykes and Steve Harvey, also chastised Smith for his actions.
The 56-year-old father of three further expressed his thoughts about the slap, during which he disclosed that the most distressing aspect was his reaction to hatred with more hatred. However, the actor from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” also confided that a profound realization came to him as he reflected on the broadcasted incident:
Reflecting on the Oscars incident, what I regret most is letting anger lead to more anger, which never resolves anything. It never does. What’s sad is all the people who got caught in the crossfire. And it struck me, as I kept replaying the situation in my mind, that everyone is struggling. Everyone is facing difficulties in life.
Despite the incident at the Oscars, Will Smith’s acting career has continued to thrive. He appeared in the period film Emancipation towards the end of 2022 and had a banner year in 2024 with the box office success of Bad Boys: Ride or Die. Additionally, he has upcoming projects like Brilliance, another sci-fi movie titled Resistor, and a return to I Am Legend for a sequel where he will be joined by Michael B. Jordan.
From his remarks made at the latest event, it appears as though the Academy Award winner has been focusing on self-improvement since the incident with the slap. Judging by his feelings expressed, it seems likely that he intends to keep the compassionate lesson he discovered and carry it forward.
