As a seasoned cinema aficionado who has witnessed the rise and fall of many blockbusters throughout the years, I must say that Sony’s latest foray into the Spider-Verse with Kraven the Hunter has left me quite underwhelmed. With an opening weekend gross of just $11 million domestically and a measly $26 million worldwide, this film is not exactly setting any records for box office success. To put it in perspective, even the critically panned Madame Web performed better on its debut!
As a movie enthusiast, I must say that my recent viewings of Moana and Wicked were quite enjoyable, leaving no room for conflict with Kraven the Hunter at the box office. Unfortunately, Sony’s latest Spider-Man spin-off, Kraven the Hunter, didn’t fare as well during its debut weekend, raking in just an estimated $11 million domestically (as reported by The Numbers). This opening yield was even lower than that of Madame Web, which premiered in February and garnered $15.3 million. In fact, Kraven’s debut marks the poorest opening weekend for any of Sony’s live-action Spider-Man titles without the iconic web-slinger himself. Remarkably, even Morbius, despite receiving critical criticism, managed to secure a better start with $39 million when it first hit theaters.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s initial portrayal of Kraven, which is expected to be his final appearance, didn’t perform significantly better in foreign markets either. The Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU) film that showcased one of Peter Parker’s nemeses as the main character, and which might have been its last, only earned $15 million internationally. This underperformance didn’t aid much, as Kraven struggled to a dismal global total of $26 million during its opening weekend, against an estimated production budget of around $110 million.
It might seem like Kraven the Hunter’s strong portrayal could seal the fate of the SSU, but Tom Holland and Shameik Moore’s portrayals of Marvel’s adored Spider-Men will prevent that from happening. Miles Morales is set to reappear in “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse”, while both Holland and Zendaya will be back for “Spider-Man 4”. Also, remember that Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Man Noir character is yet to make his live-action debut in an upcoming streaming series.
No. 1 ‘Moana 2’ Ekes Out Victory Over No. 2 ‘Wicked’
Over the past week, “Moana 2” has surpassed a global box office total of $717 million since its theater debut on November 27. Despite Disney’s animated sequel dominating the weekend, the 10-year anniversary screenings of “Interstellar” made some significant noise as well. Intriguingly, Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi masterpiece earned $3.3 million over the weekend, moving it closer to breaking the record for the highest-grossing IMAX re-release ever (according to Collider).
Over the weekend, while “Interstellar” struggled and “Kraven” didn’t perform well, “Moana 2” and “Wicked” competed fiercely for the leading position. However, Disney’s animated sequel, starring Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, maintained its dominance for a third consecutive weekend, earning $26.6 million. Interestingly, “Wicked” managed to hold its ground, experiencing a 38% drop from the previous week, which placed it in second position with $22.5 million.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that “Gladiator II” held strong at the fourth position this weekend, significantly boosting its already impressive box office earnings to a staggering $398.5 million globally. The dynamic duo of Denzel Washington and Ridley Scott continued their magic, adding another $7.8 million to the movie’s haul. Interestingly, only two new entries managed to break into the Top 10 this week, with “Kraven” being one of them. The other was an animated journey back to Middle-earth titled “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim“. Directed by Kenji Kamiyama, this anime adaptation brought the fantasy saga to life, but it only managed to earn $4.6 million, securing its place in the Top 5.
Over the weekend, the newcomer “Nickel Boys” had an impressive per-theater average of $30,422 in just two cinemas. Similarly, “September 5,” starring Peter Sarsgaard, showed a robust per-theater average of $12,714 when it debuted in seven theaters. In the coming weeks, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” and “Mustafa: The Lion King” will face off in theaters on December 20th. Anticipation is high for both films, with “Sonic 3” projected to earn over $55 million according to Deadline, while “The Lion King” prequel could rake in around $50 million.
