Dune: Prophecy’s Big Mikaela-Desmond Showdown Did Not Go Down How I Thought It Would, And Shalom Brune-Franklin Told Me The Reasons Why

As a die-hard fan of Dune: Prophecy, I must say that Episode 105 – “In Blood, Truth” has left me utterly captivated. Shalom Brune-Franklin‘s portrayal of Sister Mikaela is nothing short of mesmerizing, and her encounter with the enigmatic Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmell) was a moment I had eagerly anticipated.

Warning: spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Episode 105 – “In Blood, Truth” are in play.

Among the highly-anticipated showdowns during the final weeks of the 2024 TV lineup is the six-episode arc of HBO’s “Dune: Prophecy.” Specifically, I was eager to witness Shalom Brune-Franklin’s character, revolutionary Sister Mikaela, encounter the enigmatic Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmell). The long-awaited confrontation finally unfolded in Episode 105 – “In Blood, Truth.” To my surprise, their interaction didn’t follow my initial expectations; there are compelling explanations for this deviation.

There’s no one I’d rather chat with than Ms. Brune-Franklin directly, given that she was accessible during a special late-season Dune: Prophecy press event. During our conversation, she offered these insights to TopMob about the tense interaction between Mikaela and Desmond:

It seems as though that person you’ve heard such negative things about from your friends is almost identical to someone you already dislike. When I finally met them, the prior knowledge of their alleged bad character made it challenging not to view every action of theirs with a tainted perspective. Their mannerisms, from their walk to their speech, irritate me. I harbor resentment towards them because of the terrible things they’ve done to your friends. In essence, my opinion of Desmond has been irreversibly soured.

Initially, I found myself considering the possibility that Sister Mikaela and Desmond could find some mutual ground, given their shared experiences in the challenging landscapes of Arrakis. As hinted at by Shalome Brune-Franklin’s comments in Episode 2, they both seem to relish in challenging and overturning established power structures.

Nevertheless, the character portrayed as a twice-reborn individual, who has been wreaking havoc across the Dune universe, had a strained relationship with the secret agent aiming to dethrone Desmond’s new ally – Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong). Consequently, this destructive path did not improve the chances of Dune: Prophecy’s charming assassin when they encountered Mikaela.

In addition to what Shalom Brune-Franklin explained, the troubled history of Desmond Hart’s actions indirectly impacted the young sister and shaped her interpretation of the story in “Prophecy”.

It seemed impossible for him to win her over, yet he managed to influence her more than she expected. Mikayla isn’t easily perturbed, but this man has a knack for striking a sensitive spot within her. We’ve observed her as someone who is cold and rational, merely acting to survive and remain loyal.

In the story “In Blood, Truth”, Mikaela finds herself in a difficult predicament. The safe haven, the spice bar she shared with her revolutionary comrades, has been destroyed. To add to her troubles, after Kieran Atreides (Chris Mason) learned about Sister Mikaela’s hidden truth, he made it clear that he wanted to stay away from her. This revelation, as we witnessed last night, left Mikaela deeply saddened and distraught.

As I ready myself for the climax of Dune: Prophecy’s first season, it’s no surprise there’s a touch of tension in the air. After all, when you’re about to unveil something as groundbreaking as my record-setting run through this game, a bit of drama seems inevitable to keep the excitement at its peak. And let me tell you, the stakes have never been higher. As I delve deeper into the story, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Desmond’s fate is intertwined with none other than Sister Tula Harkonnen (played by Olivia Williams). The revelation of our shared heritage adds a whole new layer to my journey through Dune: Prophecy.

Dune: Prophecy’s Big Mikaela-Desmond Showdown Did Not Go Down How I Thought It Would, And Shalom Brune-Franklin Told Me The Reasons Why

In specific terms, that surprising event could have far-reaching implications for the Sisterhood as a whole, with viewers of HBO and Max finally getting to witness its resolution in episode 106 titled “The High-Handed Enemy,” airing on Sunday, December 22nd. As always, mark your calendars for 9 PM ET, as this week’s extended finale is set to unfold. Be advised, the closing chapter promises to be quite spectacular, so brace yourself for a potentially grand conclusion.
