As a gamer with a deep appreciation for street art and fashion, I was absolutely floored by the ASICS x CHITO showcase at SCOPE Art Show in Miami Beach. The fusion of graffiti, fine art, and high-end fashion was nothing short of breathtaking.
The SCOPE Art Exhibition in Miami Beach concluded on December 8, featuring 85 international exhibitors showcasing artworks based on the theme “Interdependence.” For the first time ever, Hypeart was presented at SCOPE during Miami Art Week, displaying works by Stickymonger, UFO907, and KATSU. Each artist highlighted the impact of spray paint in modern art.
A show put together by ASICS in collaboration with Chito, an artist from Seattle now based in Mexico, recently debuted a comprehensive overview of his early influences. This exhibition delved into the impactful footprint Chito has made across both streetwear and high-end fashion industries.
Emerging as an expressive form in cities such as Philadelphia and New York during the 1960s, graffiti (or writing) showcases its spirit as a symbol of resistance against the mainstream. A means of emotional release through color and character, CHITO reasserts its roots as a broader platform for self-expression. By experimenting with airbrushed effects and diverse media, the artist pushes the limits of storytelling and explores the intersection between fine art and fashion.
Sancheeto’s fictional character, CHITO, gained popularity following collaborations with Supreme, Givenchy, and Veilance, which saw him reimagining high-fashion backdrops using distinctive symbolism. Both luxury and casual brands have been drawn to his innovative, experimental style in linework, as well as his exceptional talent for emphasizing the intricate details of bespoke tailoring.
One of the canvases featured prominently across the exhibition is the GEL-KINETIC FLUENT™, a fresh member in the ASICS lineup. A blend of the GEL-KINETIC™ and GEL-FLUENT™ series, this design combines the finest aspects of cushioning technology, coming in both black and taupe color schemes. The FF BLAST™ PLUS and scutoid GEL™ work together to absorb impact and provide a soft, cloud-like stride. The overall design borrows inspiration from technical welding and eyelet elements, reminiscent of heritage models from the early 2010s.
CHITO embellishes the toe area of the shoes with unique “FINESSE PUP” emblems, drawing from a recurring canine symbol often seen in his unique artistic style. Various characters, some boisterous and others arrogant or cheerful, are showcased on various clothing items and coats displayed behind glass. On separate displays, family photos, personal notes, sketches, and drawings on lunch bags fill a table, offering a glimpse into the inspiration behind CHITO’s work – a sense of innocent curiosity embodied in his cartoonish figures. These characters transform the collection of garments into fun accessories, tapping into emotions that are fleeting, similar to graffiti art.
At the event, there was a small supply of the exclusive GEL-KINETIC FLUENT™ shoes for immediate purchase. These sold out incredibly quickly. To mark the collaboration, ASICS designed a unique box adorned with Chito’s original sketches, complete with whimsical motifs inspired by his gallery exhibits. During the occasion, the artist interacted with Hypeart’s audience and enthusiasts of his work had the chance to secure autographs before he left.
