As a longtime fan of the Evil Dead franchise, I must say that the upcoming movie titled “Evil Dead Burn” has me absolutely thrilled! Having grown up watching Sam Raimi’s masterpieces and even dabbling in some DIY horror filmmaking myself, I can appreciate the passion and creativity that goes into making these movies.

I’d probably get quite excited about a film titled “Evil Dead Burn” if I weren’t already deeply invested in the “Evil Dead” series. Given that the horror genre is my favorite and the “Evil Dead” franchise, known for its intense gore and unique take on demonic possession, holds a special place in my heart as my all-time favorite, this upcoming horror movie ranks high among my most eagerly awaited films, irrespective of genre.

Despite the fact that our knowledge about the upcoming movie “Evil Dead Burn” is still limited at present, as an ardent fan of Sam Raimi’s original classics, I can’t help but share some thoughts on this anticipated sequel. To start off, let’s explore a few facts confirmed about this potentially entertaining sequel.

Quick Things To Know About Evil Dead Burn

  • Evil Dead Burn is set to hit theaters in 2026, but the exact release date is unconfirmed
  • Sébastien Vaniček co-writes and directs
  • Evil Dead Burn is one of two sequels in development

In 2024, Bruce Campbell, who became a horror movie icon by leading the first three Evil Dead films, confirmed in interviews (such as with Entertainment Weekly) that the franchise would continue. Not until December would we learn, from an Instagram post by co-writer and director Sébastien Vaniček, the title and release window for his new chapter.

Sébastien Vaniček Wants To Make A “Mean FIlm” With Evil Dead Burn

After the acclaimed release of his initial full-length movie, “Infested” – a chilling thriller that might make arachnophobes think twice before subscribing to Shudder – the Paris-born director Sébastien Vaniček was chosen to direct the subsequent “Evil Dead” film, as per Deadline’s report in February 2024. He later shared with French website Konbini his ideas for the sequel in this quote:

I told the studio that I wanted to make a mean film, a film that hurts, that leaves you feeling exhausted.

Given that the original 1981 movie, The Evil Dead, was renowned for delivering intense terror as its tagline promised, “the ultimate experience in grueling terror,” Vaniček is taking on a significant challenge with this new installment and I truly hope he lives up to expectations. Interestingly, Vaniček and his writing partner Florent Bernard are working on the script together, having previously co-written Infested (known as Vermines in their home country). Notably, franchise creator Sam Raimi is producing Evil Dead Burn alongside his longtime collaborator and partner at Ghost Host Pictures, Robert Tapert.

There Is Another Evil Dead Movie In The Works

Similar to Fede Álvarez’s 2013 “Evil Dead” remake and Lee Cronin’s “Evil Dead Rise” from 2023, “Evil Dead Burn” will be a separate sequel, taking place within the same universe as the Bruce Campbell movies but featuring new characters and settings. As Campbell previously shared with AV Club, the plan is to produce an anthological installment approximately every two or three years rather than waiting decades apart, as was the case before. This strategy has already been initiated, with another follow-up in development.

Approximately two months following the announcement that Vaniček would be directing a new chapter in the Evil Dead series, it was reported that Francis Galluppi is independently developing another standalone story within the franchise. Known for his work on the 2023 crime thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County, Galluppi is said to have originated this idea and presented it to Raimi and Tapert. As of the end of 2024, no details about the plot or a potential release window have been disclosed.

Questions I Have About Evil Dead Burn

With our understanding of the movie “Evil Dead Burn” now set, let’s ponder over a few curious points it presents.

So, What Does The Title, Evil Dead Burn, Mean Exactly?

From what I initially stated, it’s clear that I have a fondness for the title “Evil Dead Burn“. In fact, I believe this could be the most fitting name for any installment in this series so far, and I’ve even considered the working title for “Army of Darkness“, “The Medieval Dead“. However, I’m finding it challenging to comprehend what inspired this particular title.

In Evil Dead Rise, there’s a clever play on words as it relates to the resurgence of the evil spirits and the high-rise setting in L.A. This has left me curious about whether the sequel also employs this dual meaning. Instead of our usual chainsaw-wielding hero, could we be introduced to a protagonist armed with a flamethrower battling against the Deadites? Or, might this symbolize something more cataclysmic, and the movie will depict a new Necronomicon chapter that unleashes Hell on earth, making the Evil Dead the harbingers of global devastation through fire? Both possibilities – or even a blend of both – excite me.

How Might Evil Dead Burn Involve Bruce Campbell?

Previously, I’ve expressed that I’m not bothered by a new “Evil Dead” movie without Ash, the protagonist from the original trilogy who stopped appearing in live-action after the cancellation of the Starz series, “Ash vs. Evil Dead.” The actor himself, who has been involved in the production of previous installments, is producing this sequel. However, I’m hoping to see the iconic character make a return in front of the camera in some capacity for this film.

In the movie “Evil Dead Rise,” he provided a lively voiceover for a vinyl recording, which could or could not have been a revival of Ash Williams from another era. Since this film is intended to be a standalone, I’d be happy if he appeared briefly in a completely new role, possibly even as a grotesque, almost unrecognizable Deadite with a hideous appearance.

How Heavy Will Evil Dead Burn Go With The Easter Eggs?

2023 found me penning a vision for an ideal future of the Evil Dead franchise, where I yearned to see fewer nods to its past entries. In the film Evil Dead Rise, the Easter Eggs were enjoyable but, at times, seemed excessively unnecessary and overly intrusive, if I may be frank.

I’m completely receptive to the concept of Vaniček acknowledging Sam Raimi’s initial films, yet I’d lean towards a subtler approach instead of direct references like a character echoing one of Ash’s catchphrases (such as Beth saying “Come get some”). I think the filmmaker should primarily strive to create a work that respects the series’ transition into an anthology horror franchise, while also crafting a unique story that distinguishes itself from other entries in the series and makes a significant impact.

Absolutely, I try not to indulge in excessive conjecture. If Sam Raimi selected Sébastien Vaniček to continue his franchise with “Evil Dead Burn“, I’m confident we can rely on him to provide us with something genuinely “cool” or “fun”.
