As someone who grew up in a small town with only one movie theater that closed down when I was young, I can wholeheartedly empathize with Daniel Craig‘s sentiments about the theatrical experience. While it’s fantastic that streaming services like Netflix bring movies into our homes, there’s just something magical about laughing in a crowded cinema, feeling the collective energy of an audience, and experiencing the story together. It’s a shared memory that can’t be replicated by pressing play on your living room TV.
Daniel Craig, famous for his portrayal of James Bond, has also left an indelible mark with the character of Benoit Blanc over the past five years. Craig first appeared as this Southern private investigator in 2019’s “Knives Out”, reprised the role in 2022’s “Glass Onion”, and will next be seen in “Wake Up Dead Man” due out next year. While “Knives Out” was a cinema release, “Glass Onion” and “Wake Up Dead Man” are exclusive to Netflix subscription services. Lately, Craig has expressed his desire for these productions to also have standard theatrical releases as well.
Recently, Craig had a chat with his co-star Josh O’Connor from ‘Wake Up Dead Man’, as part of Variety’s Actors on Actors series. Notably, they have both collaborated with director Luca Guadagnino, with Craig in ‘Queer’ and O’Connor in ‘Challengers’. During their conversation, O’Connor enquired if it was a concern for Craig that the ‘Knives Out’ movies are perceived a certain way. In response, Craig shared his thoughts on this matter.
Initially, I was taken aback by its success, as it was a fully-released film that generated significant profits and positive reactions. Despite its continued popularity, I can’t help but feel a sense of sadness because there aren’t more theatrical experiences for these movies. These films appear to resonate with people across different generations. The thought of families attending this movie together brings me immense happiness. It’s not merely a film catering to a specific audience; it’s for everyone. Moreover, the experience of sharing a cinematic moment collectively is invaluable, and while many may express similar sentiments, I believe it holds true.
The movie “Knives Out,” distributed by Lionsgate, earned over $312 million globally on a budget of $40 million, a significant return. However, following its premiere, Netflix secured the rights for the next two sequels directed by Rian Johnson. Notably, “Glass Onion” was screened in three major U.S. cinemas (AMC, Regal, and Cinemark) for one week – a unique occurrence so far. The exact earnings during this theater run are unknown, but they become irrelevant when considering Craig’s remarks. He expressed his desire for both “Glass Onion” and the upcoming “Wake Up Dead Man” to receive the same cinematic treatment as “Knives Out” did. He further added:
It’s wonderful to know that they enjoy it at home, sharing the experience with loved ones and having a good time together. However, there’s something uniquely special about going to the movies. Nothing beats the thrill of laughter echoing in a theater.
It’s uncertain if “Wake Up Dead Man” will follow the same limited theater release as “Glass Onion,” but I concur with Daniel Craig’s sentiments. Certainly, it’s convenient for people to watch these films from their homes, whether alone or with loved ones. However, the cinema experience offers a unique charm that can’t be matched at home. Regrettably, due to Netflix’s approach to screening its movies on large screens, it’s unlikely that any of them will play for longer than a week in this format.
In the upcoming movie “Wake Up Dead Man,” Daniel Craig and Josh O’Connor will be accompanied by a star-studded cast that includes Josh Brolin, Glenn Close, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church. As we eagerly anticipate further information about this third installment, why not explore other top-rated movies currently streaming on Netflix if you’ve recently finished watching “Glass Onion”?
