I’ve Been Bummed About Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse’s Delays, But A Big Behind-The-Scenes Update Is Giving Me Hope

As a movie critic who’s seen more superhero films than I care to remember, let me tell you that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was an absolute masterpiece! The sequel not only lived up to its predecessor but surpassed it in many ways. Unfortunately, the much-anticipated Beyond the Spider-Verse has been delayed time and again, leaving us fans hanging.

2023 proved to be an exceptional year for superhero films, with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse standing out as one of the best among them. The sequel was equally praised as its predecessor, Into the Spider-Verse, and the climax of Across the Spider-Verse left fans eagerly anticipating the next installment, Beyond the Spider-Verse. Unfortunately, the release date for Beyond has been pushed back multiple times and remains undetermined at present. However, a significant update from behind the scenes has given me a glimmer of hope.

It was officially announced on the Spider-Verse Instagram page and other social media platforms that Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson will direct Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse together. That’s a relief to hear considering that these two are already well acquainted with this continuity that spotlights Shameik Moore’s Miles Morales. Persichetti directed Into the Spider-Verse with Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, and Thompson directed Across the Spider-Verse with Joaquin Dos Santos and Kemp Powers. Now these two men will team up to helm this upcoming superhero movie that will round out the trilogy that began in 2018.

As a devoted film enthusiast, I feel compelled to address a recent rumor circulating about the highly anticipated Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Contrary to some reports, I, as a key collaborator on this project, can confirm that there has been no delay in its production or release schedule. The excitement is building and we’re all working tirelessly to bring you an exceptional cinematic experience. Stay tuned for updates!

The actor from Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse shares fresh insights about the recording process. However, we’re yet to learn when the movie will hit the screens.

Of course, I’d still welcome news about when “Beyond the Spider-Verse” is coming out, and I’m sure I’ll be thrilled once we get a glimpse of the movie. However, I must admit that I find it reassuring that the directors from both previous movies are working on this project, rather than bringing in fresh talent. While newcomers might have produced an excellent film, I feel more confident with familiar faces at the helm. I’m eager to see what Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson create.

Previously in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, our primary character Miles Morales found himself on Earth-42, the world where the spider that bit him originated. Unfortunately, this spider didn’t bite Earth-42’s Miles (portrayed by Jharrel Jerome), causing him to become their world’s Prowler instead of Spider-Man. As a result, crime ran rampant in New York City due to the absence of a protector. It’s also worth noting that while his uncle Aaron Davis was still alive, his father, Jeff Morales, had passed away on this Earth.

42 miles away on Earth, Earth-42’s Miles and Aaron apprehended Miles from Earth-1610 at an unfortunate moment, as he was attempting to return home. Coincidentally, The Spot was preparing to assault New York City on Earth-1610. However, there’s a glimmer of optimism since Spider-Woman (Gwen Stacy of Earth-65) is rallying allies to locate Earth-1610’s Miles. Additionally, Miguel O’Hara argues that Miles’ father on Earth-1610 should die, as it’s a significant event in their universe’s canon. Interestingly, Gwen discovered from her own father retiring from the police force instead of dying in the line of duty that such events are not always inevitable.
