In my humble opinion, Angus Cloud‘s defining project as an actor is undeniably “Euphoria.” The character of Fezco could have easily slipped into clichéd territory, but thanks to Cloud’s exceptional talent, he remains fresh and relatable.
When actor Angus Cloud unexpectedly passed away at 25 in July 2023, the world was left stunned. He became widely recognized for portraying Fezco “Fez” O’Neill on HBO’s drama series “Euphoria.” The character grew exceptionally captivating between the show’s first and second seasons, in large part due to Cloud’s nuanced yet impactful acting. However, it’s worth noting that this iconic role was just one of many intriguing and demanding film roles that he had already demonstrated a talent for selecting prior to his untimely death.
Apart from lending his voice in “The Garfield Movie” of 2024, which was forgettable, Cloud’s filmography in his growing cinematic career had been consistently excellent. He seemed to carefully select roles that were intriguing and allowed him to portray diverse, captivating characters. His foray into music videos, too, demonstrated a knack for making thoughtful artistic choices, collaborating with innovative artists such as Becky G, Noah Cyrus, and Juice Wrld.
Regrettably, these five projects make up the majority of his film and TV accomplishments, given the premature end to his career — may we keep the memory of Cloud alive for years to come by encouraging people to rewatch his stellar work on “Euphoria” and explore his underappreciated films too.
5. The Line
Angus Cloud’s second movie, titled “The Line,” set for release in 2023, is a dramatic portrayal of college fraternities. It delves into the grim reality of these organizations, focusing on the classism they breed and the conflicts that arise when fraternity members are faced with individuals they genuinely connect with versus those their fraternities deem appropriate for them to relate to. Furthermore, it explores the potential consequences when one chooses to follow their heart over allegiance to their frat.
In “The Line”, Cloud plays Robert DeWitt, a fraternity member who takes a backseat to the main characters Alex Wolff (“Hereditary”), Halle Bailey (“The Little Mermaid”), and Lewis Pullman (“Outer Range”). Despite having a relatively minor role, Cloud delivers an exceptional performance. Even without his signature facial hair, which he sported in previous roles, he stands out. Remarkably, Cloud doesn’t need to be the main focus to excel, and this film is no exception. Though he rarely takes center stage, his performance here once again showcases him as one of the most talented supporting actors of his generation. Enjoy the performances of the three leads, but don’t forget to appreciate another stellar showing by Cloud.
4. North Hollywood
2021 saw the premiere of Angus Cloud’s first movie, “North Hollywood,” during his tenure on “Euphoria.” This film, which is loosely based on the life of its director, Mike Alfred, delves deeply into Mike’s relationship with his father and his aspirations to be a skateboarder. The cast includes Ryder McLaughlin, Vince Vaughn, Miranda Cosgrove, and Gillian Jacobs in addition to Angus Cloud.
As a gamer diving into the world of acting, I found myself embracing pure hilarity more than most of my roles from Cloud’s collection. In ‘Walker’, I showcased a knack for slapstick humor that was refreshingly different from the subtle, dry wit I often displayed on “Euphoria.
3. Abigail
Let’s imagine that Angus Cloud didn’t provide a voiceover in “The Garfield Movie,” and instead, “Abigail” served as his last completed work in 2024. Following this premise, it was an impressive finale to a career that ended prematurely. The original twist on vampire films, which both mocked and celebrated the genre’s conventions, earned “Abigail” much acclaim. Notably, the film garnered significant attention as Melissa Barrera’s impressive comeback to horror after rumors suggested she was let go from “Scream 7” due to controversial remarks.
Among all the roles listed, Cloud’s part in “Abigail” is the least extensive. Regarding overall quality, the film could have claimed the top position. However, the limited screen time for Cloud as getaway driver Dean slightly reduced its ranking because this list primarily focuses on the actor’s career progression. Despite having a smaller role, Cloud demonstrates his exceptional talent in minor character parts once again, leaving a significant impression with minimal screentime. His performance is mainly there to offer expert backing to his fellow actors and their characters.
2. Your Lucky Day
Among the projects on this list, if any had a shot at dethroning “Euphoria” as Angus Cloud’s top project, it was likely his 2023 thriller “Your Lucky Day.” This isn’t just due to it being Cloud’s leading film role, but because it’s an outstanding movie – one that garnered a remarkable 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics particularly praised Cloud’s performance in the film, with Chase Hutchinson of Collider even claiming that the movie “offers one of the final proofs of how Cloud can dominate a scene like no other.
As I sat down for this gripping flick, it’s about a player bagging a whopping $150 million in a convenience store teeming with sketchy individuals – folks who, under the guidance of a man named Sterling, collectively decide that someone else should claim the prize. It’s no spoiler to say they don’t agree on sharing it amicably, and before you can say ‘popcorn,’ the peace is shattered by chaos, with Sterling orchestrating a high-stakes hostage scenario.
1. Euphoria
As much as “Your Lucky Day” is Angus Cloud’s overall best performance, it would’ve been disingenuous to select anything besides “Euphoria” as his defining project as an actor. The whole “drug dealer with a heart of gold” archetype would’ve been really easy to see descend into cliched, one-note territory, and it’s largely to the credit of Cloud’s talent that he is able to keep Fez from suffering that fate.
Absolutely, acknowledging the source of appreciation is owed to the creators of “Euphoria” for skillfully developing Fez in the second season. Instead of merely serving as a character who delivers one-liners and offers guidance to his teenage clients, he became central to many storylines. In our assessment of every character from “Euphoria” Season 2 ranked by likeability, Fezco was an obvious top pick. This recognition is equally due to the impressive acting by actor Javon “Wanna” Walton (Cloud) as it is to the well-crafted writing for the season.
Initially, it was intended for Fezco not to make it through the season, but show creator Sam Levinson found it difficult to stick with that storyline due to personal issues Cloud was facing. Levinson explained his decision to People magazine by saying, “I can’t kill [Fez] because then what would be left for [Cloud] to hope for?” This affection for Cloud as an actor and friend was shared among the entire “Euphoria” team.
