As a seasoned gamer, I’ve been through countless cinematic journeys, from the vast landscapes of Middle Earth to the gritty streets of Gotham City. However, hearing about the honors bestowed upon James Mangold and Cynthia Erivo at this year’s Sundance Film Festival gala feels like leveling up in real life.
The Sundance Institute has selected two prominent award recipients for their film festival charity event, which is sponsored by Google TV.
The gala is scheduled to occur at Utah’s Grand Hyatt Deer Valley on January 24, which happens to be the opening weekend of the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. During this event, James Mangold, an esteemed filmmaker with a rich history in the industry, will receive the Trailblazer Award. Additionally, Cynthia Erivo, best known for her role in Wicked, will be presented with the Visionary Award.
Previously announced, the upcoming event will be led by board chair Ebs Burnough and longtime trustee Pat Mitchell. This evening celebration honors Michelle Satter of Sundance Institute and dishes out Vanguard Awards, sponsored by Acura, to filmmakers Sean Wang of “Dìdi” and Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie of “Sugarcane”. Each year, this gala functions as a fundraiser for the Institute, providing support to artists through workshops, financial aid, and public events.
News of Mangold’s award comes as he’s readying for the release of his latest film, A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan. His ties to the Utah festival date back to 1994 when he participated in the institute’s year-round artist programs, work that helped him develop the script for 1997’s Cop Land. His directorial debut, Heavy, received a special jury prize for directing at the 1995 festival.
Throughout my life, Sundance has taken on various roles – a distant aspiration nestled in the mountains, a workshop where I crafted the screenplay for ‘Cop Land’, a platform where I premiered my first feature film ‘Heavy’, and eventually, a place where I nurtured upcoming filmmakers. I am astonished and appreciative that Sundance deemed my collection of work deserving of this recognition.
Currently, Erivo is garnering critical acclaim for portraying Elphaba in Jon M. Chu’s rendition of the hit Broadway musical produced by Universal Pictures. She first gained attention on Broadway with her role in The Color Purple, a performance that earned her a Grammy, Tony, and Daytime Emmy Award. Besides this, she has also acted in productions such as Harriet, Widows, The Outsider, Drift, and more.
The Oscar nominee expressed how significant it was to be associated with Sundance, a haven for daring storytellers and impactful tales, stating, ‘Being acknowledged by this remarkable community is profoundly meaningful.’ Storytelling forms the core of my craft, and it’s an honor to share in the celebration of this art form with so many exceptional artists. This acknowledgement fuels my commitment to advocate for courageous, inclusive stories that resonate, provoke thought, and elevate us all.
Starting January 23rd and running through February 2nd, I’ll be making my way to the enchanting cities of Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah for the Sundance Film Festival! From the 30th of January until the 2nd of February, some fantastic films will also be available online for those who can’t join in person. This year promises an exciting cinematic journey!
