'Happy Gilmore' Is a Free Streaming Hit Ahead of Sandler's Sequel

As a movie buff with over three decades of watching films under my belt, I must say that Adam Sandler’s ’90s run is nothing short of legendary. It’s like a comedy goldmine, and Happy Gilmore stands tall among those nuggets of laughter. The upcoming sequel has me as excited as a golfer with a hole-in-one in sight!

Ever since I graced the screen as Smitty on “The Cosby Show” back in 1987, my journey in showbiz has been nothing short of extraordinary. With a comedic resume that stretches for miles and boasts numerous hits (and a few misfires that nevertheless offered me some well-deserved getaways with my pals), I’ve managed to carve out a niche as a respected dramatic actor, thanks to projects like “Punch-Drunk Love” and “Uncut Gems.” To top it all off, I remain a cherished stand-up comedian, having released material for over three decades, with this year’s Netflix special, “Love You,” being a testament to that.

Although he has had an impressive career spanning many years, many believe that his most successful and memorable period was during the ’90s when he starred in several iconic comedies such as “Airheads” (1994), “Billy Madison” (1995), “Happy Gilmore” (1996), “The Wedding Singer” (1998), and “The Waterboy” (1998). Other films like “Little Nicky,” “Punch-Drunk Love,” and “Mr. Deeds” were not far behind. However, it’s often his role in “Happy Gilmore” that is hailed as his best comedy performance. With a sequel to this popular film set to be released soon, fans are revisiting the original “Happy Gilmore,” which is now available for free streaming on Tubi.

The movie has climbed up Tubi’s Top 10 list, surpassing its sequel that was announced for release on July 2025. Towards the end of summer, Adam Sandler chatted with Jimmy Fallon in August about the upcoming film, revealing some details about what viewers can anticipate.

My friend Tim Herlihy and I conceived an idea that has us thrilled. We have been working diligently on it, pouring our efforts into writing, and we are determined to shape it into a film that you’ll enjoy.

Tim Herlihy has collaborated on many of Sandler’s top comedies with him, including the original “Happy Gilmore.” For those who may not remember or didn’t have Comedy Central from 1996 to 2005, “Happy Gilmore” follows a character named Happy Gilmore, who is trying out for hockey but discovers that his powerful slapshot works just as well on the golf course. After repeatedly being rejected for hockey tryouts and needing money to save his grandmother’s house from tax collectors, Gilmore unwillingly takes up professional golf and learns to control his anger and find inner peace.

Sandler’s Winning Formula

Many viewers are likely to recall the sports comedy for its numerous memorable dialogues, the iconic Bob Barker fight scene, outstanding performances by Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin, Carl Weathers as Derick “Chubbs” Peterson, and Ben Stiller in his villainous role as Hal, the rest home orderly. Sandler’s talent for writing to his strengths and choosing actors he has a great time working with infuses his films with an infectious energy and longevity that keeps them fresh.

Adam Sandler often portrays a quirky, everyday character in his movies, even when he’s the son of a hotel magnate. This approach makes his immature (yet still hilarious) jokes and pranks resonate with viewers. The filmmaking style mirrors that of Saturday Night Live, requiring a certain budget within a specific timeframe. Despite not always receiving critical acclaim, Sandler consistently manages to attract audiences.

Although specifics about the sequel are yet to be revealed, the storyline centers around the ongoing rivalry between characters Happy and Shooter, a feud that has persisted over the years. As Gilmore mentors a trainee for an upcoming golf tournament, Shooter does the same, and their age-old conflict seeps into the new generation of athletes. The upcoming movie boasts an impressive cast including Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, Ben Stiller, Margaret Qualley, Bad Bunny, Benny Safdie, Maxwell Jacob Friedman, and Travis Kelce.
