After carefully examining the list of potential candidates to bring the enigmatic character of Clayface to life, I find myself particularly drawn to Paul Mescal, the young Irish actor who has captured our hearts with his raw and emotional performances in shows like “Normal People” and “The Crown.
Learning that Mike Flanagan is writing a movie about Clayface is, personally, one of the most exciting updates to the slate of upcoming DC movies I have heard in a long time (especially when considering how slow progress for Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II appears to be going). The announcement of the Clayface movie has brought up some questions, such as who is directing and whether or not Batman will appear, but what I am most curious about at the moment is who will take on the title role.
Based on Variety’s report, Flanagan (responsible for some chilling recent horror films) had proposed a “horror/thriller tragedy” version of Clayface to DC Studios. Given that Clayface is essentially a humanoid blob capable of impersonating anyone, it seems this role requires considerable acting prowess. Here are some actors who might excel at shaping the character flawlessly for an upcoming Batman movie:
Christopher Abbott
Clayface, a recurring character in DC Comics and various adaptations, is known for undergoing numerous transformations. However, two key aspects that define his criminal storyline are elements reminiscent of body horror films and explorations of identity dissolution. Actor Christopher Abbott, who recently portrayed a villain in the latest superhero film, “Kraven the Hunter“, has demonstrated versatility by embodying these themes. In the 2020 movie “Possessor“, he plays a man grappling with loss of control over his body, and in Blumhouse’s upcoming 2025 film, “Wolf Man“, he portrays a husband and father undergoing a gruesome physical transformation.
Brad Pitt
Initially, and most recognizably, Clayface was Basil Karlo – a B-movie actor from the 1940s, who adopted the title character after being overlooked for another iconic role he had previously played. This rejection pushed him over the edge into madness. In some ways, his violent behavior reminds me of Brad Pitt’s character Jack Conrad in Babylon, an aging actor yearning to recapture past glories – and that’s why I think Brad Pitt, who has limited comic book roles but is an Academy Award winner, would be perfect for the part.
Brendan Fraser
A winner of an Academy Award, Brendan Fraser, possesses firsthand knowledge of the challenge of fluctuating between the limelight and obscurity. He has begun his journey in the DC universe as Robotman on Doom Patrol, although he almost had a chance to shine brighter as Firefly before the near-completion of Batgirl was scrapped. I believe that taking on the role of Clayface could be an excellent alternative for him instead.
Zach Gilford
An actor whom I believe would also be a great choice to portray the vain and self-destructive tendencies of Clayface is Zach Gilford, based on his performance as a younger Roderick Usher in the great Netflix horror TV show, The Fall of the House of Usher. The miniseries is actually just one of a few acclaimed Mike Flanagan TV shows he has starred in (also including Midnight Mass and The Midnight Club), which could also increase his chances of landing the gig.
Oliver Jackson-Cohen
One individual from Flanagan Family alumni whom I hold in high regard is Oliver Jackson-Cohen, whose acting skills, particularly as recovering addict Luke Crain in the 2018 series The Haunting of Hill House, demonstrate his ability to portray self-destructive characters. However, it is his ghostly portrayal of Peter in The Haunting of Bly Manor that leaves me convinced he excels at bringing to life characters who are both sinister yet sympathetic – a crucial trait for playing Clayface.
Paul Mescal
Considering the need to make Clayface a sympathetic character, I believe Paul Mescal would be an exceptional choice for the part. Known for his powerful performances, this Irish actor who starred in ‘Gladiator II’ brings raw emotion to every role, making him ideal for breathing life into this peculiar comic book villain like never before.
Bill Skarsgård
Some find that Bill Skarsgård’s portrayal of a comic book hero in the 2024 reboot of “The Crow” solidifies his knack for delivering captivating villain roles, such as in Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu“. If he leverages the chilling character he portrayed in the “creepy clown” films, “It” and “It Chapter Two“, he might make a striking debut in DC movies as the most terrifying Clayface ever.
Ron Perlman
I firmly believe that Ron Perlman’s portrayal of Clayface in “Feats of Clay,” an episode from Batman: The Animated Series, stands out as one of the strongest and most iconic interpretations of this villain. By skillfully blending aspects from both Basil Karlo’s Silver Age and Post-Crisis versions, he breathed life into a portrayal that is widely recognized as definitive. Given his deep understanding of the character, having played the role of Hellboy, I think Ron Perlman would be exceptionally well-suited to bring Clayface to life in live-action, a chance he richly deserves.
Christian Bale
Ever since Christian Bale portrayed Gorr the God-butcher in Thor: Love and Thunder, fans have been speculating if this renowned Batman actor might reappear in the DC Comics film universe. Imagine the excitement if he were to step back into the DC movies, this time embodying the shape-shifting character Clayface! What a spectacle it would be, having an Oscar winner like Bale play a character known for his remarkable adaptability.
In one of Adam Holmes’ queries concerning the character of Clayface, it has been speculated that Alan Tudyk may already be cast for the role due to his prior voice work as the character in both Harley Quinn and James Gunn’s DC TV series, Creature Commandos. However, this is contingent on the continuity adopted by the upcoming DCU film, which could potentially be a standalone story like Matt Reeves’ Batman Epic Crime Saga or an Elseworlds tale. Until an official announcement is made, any of the listed actors would receive my endorsement for playing Clayface.
