As a lifelong fan of Superman, I am beyond excited about the upcoming film directed by James Gunn. The trailer has already captured my heart with its raw and emotional portrayal of our beloved hero, Superman, played brilliantly by David Corenswet.
In the trailer for his upcoming film, Superman appears to be at his lowest moment. He’s battered and wounded, forced to make an emergency landing in a frigid wilderness. His breath comes in ragged gasps, suggesting he might have lung fluid or possibly fractured ribs.
Later in the trailer, there’s a glimmer of hope – it’s none other than his loyal companion, Krypto. “Take me home,” Superman requests from his canine ally.
Among the few lines spoken in the movie is one particular instance – another being a young boy holding a homemade flag and whispering “Superman, Superman” with fervent longing – that encapsulates the hope that writer-director James Gunn aimed to instill in his latest film.

Since 1939, Superman has been a symbol of his credo, “Truth, Justice, and the American Way,” representing idealistic aspects of America globally. However, this concept has become more nuanced in recent times, prompting DC Comics to replace it with “Truth, Justice, and a Better Tomorrow” in 2021.
At a press event trailer premiere on Monday held at Warner Bros. studios in Burbank, Gunn was questioned about how he infused the moral integrity that Superman symbolizes for America and beyond into the film.
In my opinion, ‘Take me home’ seems to encapsulate the essence of this story,” I mused. “At first glance, Superman appears somewhat tarnished, much like our nation. Yet, I firmly believe in the inherent goodness within every individual residing here. Most people, regardless of their ideological leanings or political affiliations, are simply striving to make a positive impact and lead honorable lives, as it may appear from one perspective or another.
A great deal hinges on the upcoming movie titled Superman, set to release on July 11, marking the first standalone film for the character since Man of Steel in 2013. This highly anticipated project serves as a key foundation for DC Studios’ co-heads Gunn and Safran, who are spearheading an extensive lineup of TV shows and movies following their appointment by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO Zaslav. With the objective of reimagining the DC universe, the team is working tirelessly to generate anticipation. They have already engaged with the press early on, featuring stars such as David Corenswet (Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor) in this process.
Corenswet, known for his roles in Ryan Murphy’s productions like “Hollywood” and “The Politician”, admitted there were moments when he didn’t feel like a superhero on set. However, the reactions of his fellow actors towards him provided the confirmation he sought.
He said with laughter, ‘It’s similar to when you receive a flattering haircut, and at first, you don’t notice the change, but then people start complimenting you, saying ‘Wow, you look fantastic today!’ And for once, I got to experience others seeing Superman in me.’
In the course of filming, Brosnahan personally encountered that situation. During part of the production, she primarily interacted with Corenswet without his costume. On Monday, in the screening room, upon seeing him dressed up for the first time, Brosnahan exclaimed to the actor: “I vividly recall… traversing a field while you were wearing the suit. I rushed up to you and exclaimed, ‘You’re just like Superman! Incredible!’
A character’s appeal often depends on their adversary, and according to Hoult, the script by Gunn offers a version of Lex Luthor that viewers might find relatable.
Despite possibly disagreeing with his methods, it’s possible to grasp, at certain levels, the origin and rationale behind his actions. Furthermore, one might even argue that his proposed ideology could potentially be advantageous for mankind, according to Hoult.
The trailer also gave glimpses of the other superheroes in that world, including Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner/Green Lantern (dopey haircut and all), Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl and Edi Gathegi’s Mr. Terrific.
Gunn is recognized for crafting cherished animal characters like Rocket Raccoon, who took center stage in the latest film, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, last year.
Using Krypto once more, he might have outdone himself by portraying a character that deviates from the traditional comic book and media representation of him as a well-groomed, proud canine. Instead, this version seems to be a stray or rescued dog. As for the scene-stealing canine in the trailer’s release, Gunn comments: “Krypto is not even close to being the best dog. There’s much more to Krypto than what you see in this trailer.
As for the themes of the movie, Gunn said, “it’s a movie about kindness.”
