Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon is leaving Netflix, but the devs are exploring options to keep it available on mobile

  • Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon is set to leave Netflix Games
  • The move was announced by developer Yacht Club Games who confirmed they were exploring their options
  • It will still remain available on other platforms like Steam and Switch

As a long-time fan of Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon and a subscriber to Netflix Games, I must admit I’m feeling a bit like a gold miner whose luck has run out with this news. Just when I thought I could dig my pickaxe into some fresh gaming ground on Netflix, they pull the rug out from under me.

It appears that while we were excited about Squid Game: Unleashed becoming available for free this month, there’s also some disappointing news related to Netflix Games. Specifically, it was announced that Yacht Club’s Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon will no longer be available on the service.

The developers announced on Twitter that the move is indeed validated, and they added that Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon will continue to be accessible on Nintendo Switch, Steam, and PlayStation 4. I’m confident that this news doesn’t lessen the disappointment for those who initially played it through Netflix.

There’s a positive aspect to this situation since Yacht Club has indicated they’re looking into additional possibilities. It’s likely they might go for a standalone mobile release apart from Netflix, though it may not be happening right away. So, while it seems plausible, don’t expect it to happen immediately.

Can you dig it?

The removal of Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon is a sad but poignant reminder of the one risk that subscription gaming services have. Which is that you have even less ownership of something than you do elsewhere in the digital age, and that when these removals happen you’re basically beholden to the developer to ensure that it comes back in some form.

It’s likely that Yacht Club Games retain the ability to work on various projects, except perhaps under a non-compete agreement following their departure from Netflix Games. Therefore, we’ll be vigilant and hopeful for a possible comeback by them around 2025.

In the interim, should you be searching for entertainment, there’s an abundance of choices available. Feel free to explore our most recent collection of the top five newly released mobile games worth a look this week for additional suggestions!
