As a cinema enthusiast with a soft spot for gripping psychological thrillers and a deep appreciation for adaptations that stay true to their source material, I am genuinely excited about the upcoming release of “The Housemaid” starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried. The film’s intriguing plot, coupled with the stellar cast and pedigree of its creative team, promises an enthralling cinematic experience that is sure to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
Initially set for release in October 2024, according to Variety, the thriller “The Housemaid” starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried will make its debut on Christmas Day 2025 through Lionsgate. This film is based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 bestselling novel of the same name, which produced three sequels: “The Housemaid’s Secret”, “The Housemaid’s Wedding”, and “The Housemaid is Watching”.
In this story, Millie (Sweeney), facing hardships, finds a new beginning as she takes up the role of a housemaid for a wealthy duo, Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar. It turns out that their hidden truths are just as perilous as her own. Known as “The Housemaid”, this novel also features Sklenar (from “It Ends With Us” and “1923”) and Michele Morrone (“365 Days”, “Subservience”). The book cover promises a captivating psychological thriller, filled with shocking twists that will leave your jaw dropped.
‘The Housemaid’ Author Nearly Didn’t Publish The Novel
Beyond being a successful novelist, McFadden also works as a physician specializing in brain disorders, using a pseudonym to safeguard both her patients’ privacy and her own anonymity. She kick-started her writing career by self-publishing books, starting in 2013 with The Devil Wears Scrubs, a novel that draws heavily on her personal experiences as a medical resident struggling against an overbearing superior.
2019 saw me penning “The Housemaid,” a tale I hesitated to share due to its haunting depths. For years, it gathered dust on my shelf, a fear of its darkness holding me back. Little did I know that this very story would become my most significant accomplishment, selling over two million copies and catapulting me into the limelight. This unexpected success not only secured me a literary agent to handle print distribution but also opened doors for cinematic adaptations.
In my perspective, I’m eager to share that this script was crafted by Rebecca Sonnenshine, who has a rich background in writing and producing series like ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and ‘The Boys’, to name a few. This movie is being directed by Paul Feig, renowned for his work on the successful 2011 comedy ‘Bridesmaids’. He also steered the wheel for ‘A Simple Favor’, a darkly comedic thriller featuring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, where a woman delves into the mystery surrounding her missing friend.
Speaking about the project when it was unveiled in October, Erin Westerman (co-president at Lionsgate Motion Picture Group) expressed her thoughts on it.
Reading the book was enjoyable because we could visualize the characters; Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried seem ideal for Millie and Nina as they possess an air of mystery, complexity, and exceptional talent in portraying characters that don’t disclose everything immediately. We’re excited to collaborate them with Paul Feig, whom we previously worked with on ‘A Simple Favor’ and its upcoming sequel, given his demonstrated ability to craft tales centered around captivating female characters.
Adam Fogelson, head of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, expressed his excitement in a statement: “I’m delighted that ‘The Housemaid’ will be part of our upcoming lineup … A skilled filmmaker, an exceptional cast, and a remarkable script derived from a brilliant book make for an excellent beginning. My past collaborations with Paul and Amanda have been nothing less than extraordinary, and Sydney possesses the same level of talent and intrigue.
The Housemaid movie will premiere on Christmas Day 2025.
