2024 Isn’t Done With TV Cancellations Just Yet, And Another One-Season Show Just Got Axed

2024 Isn't Done With TV Cancellations Just Yet, And Another One-Season Show Just Got Axed

As a seasoned movie enthusiast who’s seen countless shows come and go, it’s always bittersweet when I hear about another series getting canceled, especially ones with potential like Sunny. I remember binge-watching that show during its short run, intrigued by the sci-fi twist in futuristic Japan and Rashida Jones’ captivating performance. It’s a shame to see it not returning for another season after such an enticing cliffhanger.

As I go through the extensive list of television series terminated in 2024, it’s astounding to grasp the sheer number of programs that fail to persist. Be it budget constraints, making space for fresh content, or the impact of Hollywood strikes, cancellations continue to pile up. With 2024 nearing its end, another short-lived series on Apple TV+’s lineup is set to be axed.

Even though 2024 is drawing to a close, it appears that the cancellation of streaming shows continues unabated. According to Screen Daily, the upcoming Apple TV+ series titled “Sunny” has reportedly been put on hold. Additionally, Max’s “Tokyo Vice,” which was canceled by the streamer in June following two seasons, is another example of a US series shot in Japan that was recently axed.

In July, the television series The Dark Manuel, adapted from Colin O’Sullivan’s novel, made its debut. Starring Rashida Jones from The Office, it follows the story of a woman residing in futuristic Japan whose husband and son tragically vanished in a plane crash. In her husband’s absence, she is provided with a robot named Sunny, due to his electronics company. The robot forms a connection with her, assisting her in uncovering the truth behind her family’s disappearance.

Regrettably, it’s been announced that following ten suspenseful episodes, the Apple TV+ series will not be renewed for another season.

Apart from “Sunny,” several other shows on Apple TV+ were unfortunately axed this year. In May, the streaming service discreetly terminated two productions – the British romantic comedy “Still Up” and the sci-fi thriller “Constellation.” The American comedy series “The Big Prize Machine” managed to complete just one season despite positive reviews from Fresh Rotten Tomatoes. Even the fantasy-adventure show “Time Bandits,” featuring Lisa Kudrow, didn’t make it beyond its first season. Similar to Netflix, which often cancels shows after their debut, Apple TV+ has also given many of its series a single chance before bidding them farewell forever.

It seems that Apple TV+ has been swift in canceling several popular shows, but there have also been numerous hit series on the streaming platform that have been renewed for another season this year as well.

In simple terms, the second season of the screen version based on “The Last Thing He Told Me” novel is set to come back.

Additionally, the dystopian series Silo has been greenlit not only for Season 3 but also for Season 4! This year, Bill Lawrence’s Shrinking and Bad Monkey have also received renewals. Let’s not forget about Apple TV+’s highly acclaimed show Palm Royale, which is set to return for another season.

Unfortunately, it’s disappointing to ponder over the numerous series like “Sunny,” which aren’t given the opportunity to flourish in the same way.

Nevertheless, you can always go back and rewatch Season 1 with an Apple TV+ subscription before moving on to the other good content the platform has to offer.
