Netflix Releases a Sort of 'Squid Game' on Google

As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for Korean dramas and a soft spot for survival games, I must say that Netflix’s latest moves regarding the upcoming second season of Squid Game have left me utterly thrilled! The interactive Google Easter Egg is a genius move to engage fans and keep the hype train rolling. It’s not every day you get to play a game from one of your favorite shows without even leaving your browser!

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement for the upcoming second season of Netflix’s phenomenal show, Squid Game. To make the anticipation even more thrilling, Netflix has rolled out a variety of fresh merchandise and a special Yule Log video that captures the Christmas spirit. But here’s the kicker – for those who dare to explore the series on Google, they’ll stumble upon an interactive Google Easter Egg, making the digital search experience feel like a game within the game itself!

The game associated with the show was made available on December 19, just a week prior to the series’ second season launch on December 26. When you search for the show using either web or mobile browsers, a small brown envelope icon appears at the screen’s bottom. Upon clicking it, the well-known animatronic girl doll, Young-Hee, along with two soldiers and six contestants in tracksuits, appear on your screen.

Players must navigate their six characters across a line near Young-Hee without her noticing, using the O and X buttons. If she spots them moving, they disappear instead of being killed on screen. Successfully crossing unharmed rewards players with a large piggy bank filled with confetti (not as exciting as real money, but it’s the trade-off for playing a less lethal version of one of Squid Game’s numerous challenges).

This Isn’t The Only Free ‘Squid Game’ You Can Play Right Now

Though Netflix has been dabbling in gaming for some time, the majority of their gaming content is exclusive to paying members. However, on December 17, Netflix made a move by releasing a mobile version of Squid Game that’s accessible for free (which means you don’t need a Netflix subscription or borrow someone else’s password to enjoy it). Netflix labels this game as “the ultimate Squid Game video game.

Per an official statement from Netflix, the synopsis for Squid Game: Unleashed is as follows:

Get ready for thrilling, pulse-racing combat and intense rivalry in this multiplayer battle royale game! Join forces with friends (or foes) online to test your mettle against other contestants in grueling tournaments. Can you endure and emerge victorious amidst the twisted mayhem? Each round offers a chilling journey back to childhood, filled with perilous obstacles reminiscent of our favorite series, as well as innovative games based on beloved pastimes. Will you survive playtime unscathed?

I can confidently say that I’ve been part of something extraordinary – the global phenomenon known as “Squid Game.” In just the first month after its debut in 2021, this series racked up an astounding 1.65 billion hours of viewership on the streaming platform!

In the upcoming Season 2 of the show, the initial victor from Seong Gi-hun (portrayed by Lee Jung-jae) will reenter the central games to rescue fellow players and confront those powerful billionaires pulling the strings behind it all. Critics are eagerly anticipating this second season as a “spectacular comeback”. Excitingly, the series has been greenlit for a third and concluding installment, which is already in the scripting phase, reducing the likelihood of another three-year wait to unravel the thrilling narrative.
