As a seasoned observer of the dynamic world of Bollywood, I find myself intrigued by the saga of Gadar 2 and its behind-the-scenes drama between director Anil Sharma and actress Ameesha Patel. Having spent years immersed in the celluloid jungle, I’ve come to understand that such conflicts are as much a part of movie-making as the popcorn we munch on during screenings.
Prior to the premiere of Gadar 2, news about director Anil Sharma and lead actress Ameesha Patel’s disagreement often made headlines. More recently, the filmmaker disclosed this information and explained that Ameesha initially had reservations about taking on the role of a mother-in-law. However, he believed that if she was willing to portray a mother on screen, she should also be prepared to play the part of a mother-in-law.
During a recent conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Anil Sharma clarified that Ameesha Patel’s request for certain aspects within her character Sakina in the movie Gadar 2 originated from her professional aspirations and expectations related to the film’s narrative as an actor.
The actress found it difficult to adapt to the new role as a mother-in-law in Gadar 2 because she didn’t receive the same amount of screen time or clarity about the progression and age of her character that she did when playing Jeete’s mother in Gadar 1.
To underscore his argument, he pointed out the acting careers of other Indian actresses such as Nargis Dutt who portrayed a mother character in Mother India at a young age. He expressed, “She may be putting in a lot of effort on herself, but she is an artist, just like Nargis Dutt had to play a mother role on screen even when she was young.
Sharma believed Ameesha Patel’s choice was likely influenced by the pressures of contemporary branding. He noted that nowadays, it’s commonly thought that actors should steer clear of specific roles to preserve their public image. This might have led to a dilemma for her, but eventually, things were resolved.
Regardless of the obstacles, Sharma conveyed his enduring admiration for Ameesha, stating that she remains the same Sakina from Gadar 1 to him. He emphasized that he holds no resentment towards her, and considers her as one of his own family members, a connection that persists.
Furthermore, discussing the media coverage of Patel’s remarks concerning her on-screen son Utkarsh Sharma in Gadar 2, the filmmaker acknowledged that her comments, which mentioned his name, caused him a sense of pain.
He said, “It felt cheap sometimes, but I believe she didn’t mean any harm.” However, his son Utkarsh, took it sensibly and had let the matter go, saying this is part of the industry and made him stronger to face criticism in the future.
In the sequel to “Gadar”, titled “Gadar 2”, Anil Sharma took on the director’s chair. The film featured prominent performances by Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel, Utkarsh Sharma, and Simrat Kaur in key roles.
