As a film enthusiast with over two decades of watching Marvel movies under my belt, I can confidently say that Tom Hiddleston‘s portrayal of Loki stands out as one of the most captivating villain-turned-hero performances in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a recurring debate has persisted: the villains often lack depth and complexity. As I’ve journeyed through these films in sequence, it’s hard to refute this observation. Yet, there have been exceptions that prove the rule, and none more so than Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal of Loki. This enigmatic character has managed to captivate audiences time and again with his intricate layers and compelling performance.
In my humble opinion, Loki, who first graced our screens in the initial Thor film (now streaming on Disney+), later transformed into the primary adversary in the Avengers’ inaugural outing, stood out as the most captivating Marvel Cinematic Universe villain – until he switched sides and joined the heroes. I must say that Marvel Studios hit the jackpot when Hiddleston accepted the role; it’s quite astonishing considering he hadn’t even auditioned for it!
A clip recently went viral on Instagram of a Tom Hiddleston appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in which the actor reveals something I hadn’t known before, that he never actually auditioned for Loki. Instead, he only ever auditioned to play Thor and was then offered the other role only after he wasn’t picked to play the title character. Check out the clip below for the whole story, as well as a clip of his Thor audition tape.

According to Hiddleston, the entire audition process lasted a significant three-month span, suggesting it was quite an extensive tryout. Given such a prolonged audition, it’s reasonable to assume he felt fairly confident about landing the role. However, Hiddleston also confessed that for a moment, he thought he might have secured the part. It could have been disheartening, especially considering Chris Hemsworth failed his initial audition. Interestingly, it was only after Liam Hemsworth was considered too young that the older brother was given another chance.
Marvel Studios seemed to have a keen eye for talent when it came to the Thor film, as they recognized Tom Hiddleston’s potential during his initial audition. Instead of asking him to try out again to confirm his suitability, they instinctively felt he was perfect to portray Loki, the movie’s second significant character. It appears their intuition proved accurate, as Hiddleston delivered an outstanding performance.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Loki undergoes an extensive transformation from a foe of the Avengers, to a hesitant ally of Thor, and eventually evolves into a genuine hero, gracing his own Disney+ Marvel series – a unique achievement as it’s currently the only one that has been granted a second season.
The future role of Tom Hiddleston and his character Loki in potential Marvel films remains uncertain, but it’s safe to say we’re all content with his not becoming Thor. Although he might have excelled as Thor, who else could have portrayed Loki so brilliantly?
