'Superman' Trailer May Include Reference to Flash Vilain Gorilla Grodd

As a lifelong fan of DC Comics who has followed the adventures of Superman since I was a kid, I must say that the new trailer for James Gunn’s upcoming film has me absolutely thrilled! The prospect of finally seeing the Man of Steel grace the big screen again is beyond exciting.

The initial trailer for James Gunn’s take on Superman was unveiled this week, generating enthusiastic responses from both hardcore fans and casual viewers, amassing an unprecedented number of views. In the lead role, we have David Corenswet as our titular character. This Superman film marks the beginning of the DC Universe (DCU) and lays the groundwork for a series of upcoming projects from DC Studios. Despite Gunn’s assertion that the Kryptonian solo adventure is self-contained, it offers fans a comprehensive glimpse into the broader cinematic universe and its characters. Keeping an eye out in the two-minute sneak peek, some sharp-eyed fans may have spotted a well-known Flash antagonist being hinted at within Superman.

Following the debut of the latest Superman trailer, viewers on platform X took a closer look at the scene where Clark Kent (Corenswet) stumbles towards the Daily Planet. Outside the building, a police officer can be seen reading a newspaper with the headline “Hammer of Boravia Wreaks Havoc Downtown.” Beneath this, a fuzzy image that strongly resembles the DC villain Gorilla Grodd is featured. It’s been suggested that “Hammer of Boravia” might be a reference to Grodd, an infamous, fascist, and anti-human ape with unique abilities. The intriguing aspect is that this character has recently appeared in Creature Commandos, another production within the DCU. While the details are a bit unclear, the resemblance to his animated version is quite striking.

For those who aren’t familiar, Gorilla Grodd is an intelligent and malevolent telepathic ape, one of the Flash’s most famous adversaries in DC Comics lore. He has been portrayed as the main antagonist in CW’s The Flash multiple times, and also appeared in Legends of Tomorrow. Notably, Grodd once traveled through time on this series, with a memorable attempt to eliminate a young Barack Obama. While this detail isn’t crucial for understanding his character, it’s such an astonishing fact that I feel compelled to mention it. Grodd has been featured in live-action and animation before, but Superman could be the one to bring him to the big screen for the first time.

Gorilla Grodd Already Made His DCU Debut in ‘Creature Commandos’

In the realm of DC Comics, Superman kicks off the rebooted universe on the big screen, while Max’s Creature Commandos animated series marks the launch of the new franchise. While the show primarily focuses on James Gunn’s motley crew of creatures, it subtly weaves elements of the broader cinematic universe into its narrative. Mild spoilers follow: This week’s episode of Creature Commandos, coinciding with the release of the Superman trailer, presents an apocalyptic vision from the series’ antagonist, Circe. In this vision, she foresees a future where the world’s mightiest heroes are wiped out due to Gorilla Grodd seizing control of the planet.

In the Superman trailer, a place called Boravia was featured in a newspaper. Interestingly, Boravia is also mentioned in Creature Commandos. Given Gorilla Grodd’s involvement, it seems plausible to speculate a connection. Since Grodd is currently the most significant villain confirmed in the DC Universe (apart from Lex Luthor), this connection is intriguing. However, until James Gunn officially confirms it, this is all speculation. Yet, the evidence is compelling, and considering Gunn’s meticulous approach to his projects, it’s worth noting that there might be more to this than meets the eye.
