As a seasoned cinephile with decades of binge-watching under my belt, I must say that the rollercoaster ride that is the world of streaming never ceases to surprise me. The latest chapter in this ongoing saga is the cancellation of The Acolyte, a series that seemed to have all the ingredients for success but was ultimately brought down by the cold, hard numbers game.
It seems that is now gaining traction on Disney+ once more with the show Skeleton Crew, which has been one of the highest-rated shows in the franchise since the initial season of The Mandalorian. Conversely, when was initially launched in June, it faced criticism from audiences for similar issues that have plagued many other Star Wars ventures.
The Acolyte had completed its run, yet despite amassing a loyal audience and hinting at future episodes, it was unexpectedly terminated, leaving fans with little anticipation for a potential Season 2. Fans fiercely criticized Disney and Lucasfilm for cancelling the series, alleging that they ended the show due to racial bias and other accusations that made up the majority of the negative feedback towards the program.
It appears that the main reason for the cancellation of The Acolyte is because it was too expensive to produce compared to the income it brought in. In an interview with Vulture, co-chair of Disney Alan Bergman stated that the decision regarding The Acolyte was based on financial considerations…and suggested that the future of Skeleton Crew will also depend on similar factors, despite its positive critical reviews. He expressed: “The numbers played a significant role in our decision about The Acolyte, and they’ll likely have an impact on Skeleton Crew as well.
Regarding Acolyte, we were content with our output, but it didn’t meet the required level considering its cost structure for producing a second season. Consequently, we chose not to proceed with another installment. In contrast, Skeleton Crew is currently under development and we’re optimistic about its progress. It has shown some growth already. The reception for Skeleton Crew has been outstanding, so we’ll have to wait and see how things unfold as it advances further.
Cancelations Often Come Down to Costs
Regardless of whether a series is critically acclaimed or panned, the decision about its renewal often boils down to financial considerations. As streaming shows tend to have escalating production budgets without box office revenues for recoupment, it can be less straightforward to understand how these platforms generate income compared to traditional movie releases. Instead, they utilize a variety of factors like boosted subscriber counts, merchandising partnerships, syndication, and other means to determine a show’s profitability.
Over the past few years, fantasy and sci-fi shows have faced significant challenges on streaming platforms like Disney+. Specifically, productions with heavy special effects costs and extensive post-production work often struggle to secure a renewal for another season due to their high production costs. In other words, these types of shows need to be among the most popular on a platform to justify a second season.
Critics often voice their displeasure towards streamers when popular series that were abruptly ended after just one season continue, while poorly received shows persist for multiple seasons. Lately, the show Velma has faced a lot of backlash due to its first season being one of the least liked on Max, yet it still managed to secure a second season and a Halloween special before getting canceled. Interestingly, at the same time, Warner Bros. Discovery was axing completed movies and putting other TV shows on hold in an attempt to cut costs. It seems that logic doesn’t always play a role in these decisions, doesn’t it?
