As a die-hard fan of Disney movies and someone who grew up with “The Lion King” as a staple of my childhood, I must say that “Mufasa: The Lion King” is an emotional rollercoaster that takes the story to new heights (or should I say depths?). The film masterfully weaves together heartwarming moments and gut-wrenching reminders of Mufasa’s tragic fate.
Warning: Spoilers for Mufasa: The Lion King.
From the moment Mufasa: The Lion King begins, it immediately tugs at audiences’ heartstrings. Thanks to its small remembrance of the late James Earl Jones, who famously voiced Mufasa in the original beloved classic, The Lion King, as well as its live-action remake in 2019, viewers were primed for waterworks. The prequel unfolds in a series of flashbacks as Timon (Billy Eichner), Pumbaa (Seth Rogen), and Simba’s (Donald Glover) daughter, Kiara (Blue Ivy Carter), gather around Rafiki (Kagiso Lediga) to hear the story of how Mufasa (Aaron Pierre/Braelyn and Brielle Rankins) came to be king. A lion cub who lost his mother and father in a flash flood, Mufasa ends up far away from his home and encounters a young cub named Taka (Kelvin Harrison Jr./ Theo Somolu), who was destined for his own throne as the son of a king.
Raised by Eshe (Thandiwe Newton), Taka, who is actually Scar, affectionately considers the lion cubs his brothers at first. However, as viewers are already aware, this joyful reunion doesn’t persist for long since Taka, previously known as Scar, had betrayed Mufasa when they were still cubs, earning his nickname. Despite anticipation, it was disheartening to witness Taka transform into the vengeful and ruthless Scar. The tender bond between Mufasa and Taka that deepened as they grew up together adds poignancy to Mufasa’s tragic death in The Lion King.
How Taka Saves Mufasa Only Reminds Viewers How Scar Kills Mufasa
Read Our Review
In the heartwarming moments shared between Mufasa and young Taka, it was evident that Taka might have acted heroically, but that didn’t make him as courageous as his brother Mufasa. As the story unfolded, I found myself reflecting on how Taka’s underlying insecurities seemed to grow stronger over time, a development that was both intriguing and troubling given their future roles. The bond between them was undeniably strong, yet Mufasa’s recurring references to the fateful incident where Scar cast Mufasa off the cliff served as poignant reminders of their fleeting happiness. Just when we forget about the looming darkness, Mufasa gently nudges us back to reality, hinting that Taka would never truly live up to the brother he initially presented himself to be.
In the movie “The Lion King,” Taka’s repeated actions of rescuing Mufasa multiple times echo Scar’s eventual act of letting Mufasa die. Each time Taka saved Mufasa, it might have appeared as a joyous and triumphant moment to the viewers. Yet, these moments served as stark reminders for the audience about how Scar ultimately took Mufasa’s life. This sad truth cast a shadow over every interaction between the brothers in the film, making it difficult for any moment to be truly joyful because of the ever-present knowledge that Mufasa was destined to meet his tragic end at the hands of his own brother. The supposedly carefree bond between the brothers is consistently marred by what the audience already understands about their future.
Mufasa’s Mercy For Scar Was Like a Knife to the Heart
In contrast to Scar’s actions filled with vengeance and contempt, Mufasa consistently displayed mercy. Although Taka rescued Mufasa from Kiros’ attack, he ultimately deceived his brother in a manner that could lead to Mufasa’s death. Despite discovering the truth about Taka’s betrayal, Mufasa’s response was not retribution but silence, earning him the name Scar. This choice was heart-wrenching for viewers, as it underscored the fact that even an abundance of mercy could not prevent what Scar ultimately did to Mufasa. Ultimately, the development of Taka’s character into Scar and his motivation to kill his own brother and nephew continue to evoke tears from audiences.
In a new twist, the film “Mufasa: The Lion King” underscores the deep bond Mufasa shared with his brother Taka, who was never as courageous. This lack of bravery ultimately led Taka to a path of dishonesty and treachery. As viewers remember Mufasa’s demise in “The Lion King,” they cannot help but feel the tragedy even more deeply. The death of Mufasa, a pivotal moment for many Millennials, was already heart-wrenching, yet this film manages to make it even more poignant. Indeed, “Mufasa: The Lion King” is now playing in theaters, and the original “The Lion King” is available on Disney+.
