As a seasoned movie buff with decades of film history under my belt, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia when I think about the Star Trek franchise and its beloved characters. It’s been nearly a decade since we last saw Zoe Saldaña‘s Nyota Uhura on the big screen in Star Trek Beyond, and it seems as though we’ve been waiting just as long for the next installment – Star Trek 4.
Approximately ten years have passed since “Star Trek Beyond” hit the big screen, marking the last appearance of Zoe Saldaña’s Nyota Uhura and the USS Enterprise crew from the Kelvin timeline on the silver screen. Following this, the science fiction franchise has seen a revival on television through streaming services like Paramount+ (and “Prodigy” shifting to Netflix), with Celia Rose Gooding portraying a younger version of Uhurua in “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”. Despite ongoing efforts, the production of “Star Trek 4” has faced numerous obstacles, and Saldaña has expressed her candid views on the project’s prolonged development.
In an interview with Deadline, the actress who is known for portraying Gamora in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Neytiri in the Avatar films, expressed her view that Star Trek 4 should start production promptly. She explained that she and other actors might become too old to reprise their roles if the project is delayed any further.
It’d be great if we could carry out the task more immediately instead of delaying it. Given how many of us are sporting silver locks these days, it seems urgently necessary to move forward, especially if the same group will reenact it once more.
It was confirmed before the release of Beyond that Star Trek 4 was in the works, featuring Chris Pine’s James T. Kirk meeting his father, George (played by Chris Hemsworth). However, the project has undergone numerous changes, with directors like S.J. Clarkson, Noah Hawley and Matt Shakman joining and leaving it. As we approach 2025, it seems that Star Trek 4 is no nearer to becoming a reality. Zoe Saldaña, who plays Uhura, humorously expresses concern about when the Kelvin crew can reunite again. This sentiment contrasts with Spock actor Zachary Quinto’s viewpoint, as he believes there are no restrictions on when Star Trek 4 could be made, since the cast of Star Trek: The Original Series continued making movies even into their 50s and 60s.
As for Spock, Saldaña expressed optimism about the production of “Star Trek 4,” expressing a desire to delve deeper into the relationship between Uhura and her Vulcan colleague. Their romantic connection was established in the initial two reboots of “Star Trek,” but they had parted ways before “Beyond.” In her own words:
After quite some time away from the captivating universe of Star Trek, I found myself eagerly revisiting the intricate relationships that define this iconic series. The bond between Uhura and Spock has always been a compelling one, and now, I’m intrigued to explore where their personal and professional journey leads next. Let’s find out!
It’s important to note that fans of Star Trek won’t run out of movies to look forward to in the coming years. The upcoming Paramount+ exclusive film, titled Section 31, is set to debut at the end of January, and there’s also a new Star Trek movie focusing on its origins planned for release some time in 2025. However, it seems that the development of Star Trek 4 hasn’t made much progress recently. I can certainly relate to Zoe Saldaña’s eagerness for the project to move forward more swiftly, given how long we’ve been waiting already.
Regarding the remainder of the Star Trek universe, following the arrival of Section 31 and Strange New Worlds Season 3, which is set to debut soon, Star Trek TV shows in the pipeline include Starfleet Academy. Currently, filming for this series is underway. However, it’s uncertain whether it will air on the 2025 television schedule or be held back for a release in 2026.
