As a movie critic who’s spent a considerable part of my life in the dark, surrounded by the silver screen, I can confidently say that the news about Jason Bourne‘s potential return is as elusive and mysterious as the man himself. While I’ve seen many a director come and go, none have quite captured my attention like Edward Berger has lately. His recent successes with “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “Conclave” are nothing short of impressive.
The famed action star, Jason Bourne, is known for his elusive nature, often employing these skills to avoid pursuers such as captors, the government, and assassins. However, at present, he seems to be using them against us, leaving uncertain whether his amnesiac hitman character will reappear in Bourne 6. To clarify, we’re unsure about the status of this return due to ambiguity surrounding the action thriller sequel from director Edward Berger, who recently told Cinema Daily that the project’s details are “quite unclear.
To be honest, it’s uncertain if I’ll be involved with anything new right now or in the future. There are multiple possibilities, but I need to focus on releasing Conclave in theaters soon and completing The Ballad of a Small Player by next summer. Anything beyond that is hard for me to foresee. However, I admire the Bourne franchise, and if there’s an untold story within it that warrants a return, and I feel confident I can deliver a film as good as those Paul Greengrass made – which are exceptional – then I might consider it. But, meeting that high standard is quite a challenge.
After receiving an Academy Award for Best International Feature Film for his World War I movie “All Quiet on the Western Front” and generating buzz for his religious mystery thriller “Conclave”, Berger is currently swamped with work, leaving uncertainty as to whether he’ll ever find the time to direct a Jason Bourne film. Given the impressive movies he’s been producing lately, it would be a real pity if this opportunity passed him by.
Edward Berger Is on Board With ‘Bourne’… So Long as It’s for the Right Reasons
Although there has been talk about Bourne 6, Matt Damon involved, and speculation, the situation is now unclear. Adding to the confusion, Edward Berger expressed interest in directing a sequel for the action series, as long as they can find convincing reasons to bring back Bourne.
“You really need a new agenda of bringing that back, otherwise there’s really no reason. You can only bring it back if you have something new to tell, something new to add. That would probably also be Matt Damon’s only reason to come back. He’s not going to need money. He’s not going to need to make this. If he can have an inner journey… if an actor finds that to play, then that’s a wonderful challenge, and if you can’t find it, then better not make a movie like that.”
In October, news broke out that Bourne 6, featuring Edward Berger and Matt Damon, now also carries the tentative title of “The Bourne Dilemma“. This title might simply be a working one as the studio works on fitting all the puzzle pieces together.
In 2002, Damon debuted as the cunning assassin Jason Bourne in “The Bourne Identity,” and each subsequent film, including “The Bourne Supremacy” and “The Bourne Ultimatum,” received high praise from critics, revitalizing the action movie genre. However, the latest installment featuring Damon, 2016’s “Jason Bourne,” did not receive as much acclaim as its predecessors, and with a new director (such as Berger) taking over, there is hope for fresh ideas in the series.
