As a child of the ’90s and an avid fan of horror movies, I can confidently say that “The Faculty” is one of those films that resonates deeply with my generation. It was a breath of fresh air during the teen horror boom, offering a self-aware take on the genre that was both entertaining and thought-provoking.
During the teen horror movie boom in the late ’90s, many people who were growing up then would often mention 1998’s “The Faculty” as one of their favorites. This film, penned by Kevin Williamson, had a significant impact on sci-fi films much like how his own “Scream” revolutionized the slasher sub-genre. The characters in “The Faculty” were clever and well-versed in the conventions of those movies. Although it wasn’t as financially successful as “Scream”, “The Faculty” was a moderate success and has since gained cult status.
After a basic DVD and Blu-ray launch without additional content, fans have been eagerly waiting for more. That wait finally ended this week with Shout! Factory’s 4K Collector’s Edition of the movie. This new release offers exclusive bonus features for the first time, but regrettably, director Robert Rodriguez chose not to participate in any of them.
Dawn of Discs shared a conversation on their Twitter page with Daniel from Ballyhoo Motion Pictures, who worked on the extra features for the latest collector’s edition. Some fans who had already purchased the new movie version found that Rodriguez was missing in the additional content, and it appears he chose not to participate. Daniel explained this situation.
In regards to the supplementary content for this production, I’m able to share that RR expressed no interest in appearing on-screen or providing audio commentary for this movie. However, his office has given their seal of approval for the content of the features – that’s as much as I can disclose about the matter.
When someone pointed out that it seemed unusual for Robert Rodriguez to decline involvement in the film, as it’s considered one of his best works, Daniel didn’t offer further details but did suggest that he had attempted to include him multiple times by stating, “ Frankly, I’m not entirely sure. I was prepared to travel to Austin to conduct the interview if he agreed. I asked more than once.” It remains unclear as to why Rodriguez might have declined participating in this new project, but there are some theories that may offer an explanation.
‘The Faculty’s Connection to Bob and Harvey Weinstein Could Be the Issue
The movie titled “The Faculty” was distributed by Dimension Films, thus associating it with Bob and Harvey Weinstein. This wasn’t their first or last collaboration; they had previously worked together on films such as From Dusk till Dawn, the Spy Kids series, Sin City, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D, and Planet Terror, which was part of the Grindhouse double feature also directed by Quentin Tarantino. Although Robert Rodriguez produced several successful films under the Miramax and Dimension Films label, Weinstein’s negative impact on Hollywood is significant, and their relationship was not just professional but personal as well.
In the past, Rodriguez was romantically involved with Rose McGowan, a bond that formed during the filming of “Grindhouse.” Notably, McGowan was one of the first individuals to publicly accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault, an allegation that sparked the #MeToo movement and ultimately contributed to Weinstein’s downfall. In 2017, Rodriguez admitted that he was aware of the alleged assault when he cast McGowan in “Grindhouse,” using her role as a means of protest against Weinstein. He claimed that Weinstein intentionally suppressed “Grindhouse,” which Rodriguez suspects led to its underperformance at the box office. Given this history, it is unlikely that Rodriguez would be inclined to discuss a film on camera that is inextricably linked to the Weinsteins.
The film centers around the pupils of Herrington High School, who are growing suspicious that their teachers might be extraterrestrials, aiming to transform students into their kind. This intriguing movie boasts a talented ensemble including Elijah Wood, Josh Hartnett, Jordana Brewster, Shawn Hatosy, Famke Janssen, Usher Raymond, Clea DuVall, Laura Harris, Piper Laurie, Bebe Neuwirth, Jon Stewart, and Robert Patrick. Upon its debut, the movie proved successful, earning a total of $63.2 million globally on an initial investment of $15 million.
