As a long-time movie buff who’s seen more than my fair share of series finales, I must say that the conclusion of Blue Bloods has left me with a mix of emotions. While it’s bittersweet to see such a well-loved show come to an end, I can’t help but marvel at its impressive 14-season run.
The final episode of the highly-rated series Blue Bloods, which has been on the air since 2010, recently aired as part of the 2024 TV lineup, marking the end of its 14-season run. Although it’s difficult to accept that the show has come to an end, its longevity was remarkable. Over the years, this police procedural became a reliable choice for CBS on Friday nights, and a significant factor in its success was the talented cast, led by Tom Selleck. After portraying Frank Reagan for over a decade, Selleck shared his thoughts on the potential risks of being in a show for such an extended period and how he managed to avoid those pitfalls while playing this iconic character.
Tom Selleck found it challenging to conclude his run on the series “Blue Bloods“. However, given his past experience with saying farewell to iconic roles like in the original “Magnum P.I.” during the ’80s, which spanned over eight seasons, it’s clear he’s no stranger to such transitions. Remarkably, “BB” became his longest-running role, a feat worthy of pride. Nevertheless, Selleck understands the potential challenges that come with playing a role for an extended period, as he shared in an interview with “Entertainment Weekly“.
Everything you put into your work accumulates within, expanding not only your acting skills but also your viewpoint. I’ve always felt that an actor’s dedication should exude a sense of ‘Here goes nothing!’, though it’s actually ‘Here goes everything.’ I used to think that after performing for 15 years, the risk would be complacency, thinking ‘I know this routine, what are the jokes?’ But instead, it becomes a continuous journey of learning and growth.
Acting in a single role for an extended period can be challenging as it involves repeatedly using the same acting skills day after day. This could potentially lead to becoming overly comfortable and even bored. However, the actor portraying Jesse Stone found no such monotony while playing Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods because, similar to all characters in the series, their development deepened as the show progressed. This aspect of character growth was something that the 79-year-old actor greatly valued.
For 15 years, I kept discovering more about the character of Frank Reagan and found myself captivated, never experiencing a moment of boredom. It’s remarkable to acknowledge that none of the actors ever delivered an uninspired performance, which was a potential risk. In fact, it’s hard to imagine starting a show and predicting I’d be uninterested after 15 years. That never occurred. I take pride in saying this, as the writers also kept the characters developing and transforming over time. Fifteen years is quite a stretch, and naturally, we all change physically and in other ways during that period. We simply grow older. However, these changes became valuable insights for my acting manual, as I have no intention of retiring from work.
Watching characters develop over time could be one of the most rewarding aspects of a series spanning multiple years. As a spectator, I find it fascinating to observe how actors age and the ways their characters grow along with them. This process, which can sometimes be unpredictable, is often a testament to skillful writing and production. In the case of “BB”, I believe they handled this evolution remarkably well, adding depth to characters in a believable manner. And judging by the numerous social media posts over the years, it seems that fans also appreciated this aspect.
Regarding this topic, Selleck finds it puzzling as to why CBS chose to discontinue Blue Bloods, and he expressed his disappointment with its termination. His recent statements hint at a deep connection he had with the show. Earlier, Selleck discussed the series’ long-lasting run, appreciating both the Reagan family gatherings and the action scenes. However, even though the show has been canceled, Selleck is determined to accomplish one goal:
My primary aim is to convey that our endeavor concluded triumphantly and impressively. It wasn’t due to exhaustion or any other reason. Perhaps someone will explain to me one day why CBS chose to terminate it, but I haven’t received a convincing explanation so far.
There’s been talk about potentially creating a new series based on the show “Blue Bloods,” but CBS hasn’t officially announced anything yet. Still, it wouldn’t be unexpected if they decide to go ahead with it. While it would be tough to replicate the original show’s popularity, I’m confident that Tom Selleck would be open to participating – as long as his character remains fresh and unpredictable. Currently, you can watch “Blue Bloods” on Paramount+.
