As a long-time Grey’s Anatomy enthusiast with a heart full of memories from the past 18 seasons, I find myself pondering the potential return of Nathan Riggs, played by the ever-charming Martin Henderson. Having witnessed the ebb and flow of characters in this medical drama, I can’t help but feel a twinge of hope that we might see Riggs grace the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial once more.
As “Grey’s Anatomy” took a mid-season break, not set to air again until March 2025, it bid farewell to fan favorites Dr. Levi Schmitt and Dr. Mika Yasuda. Longtime fans of the series like myself are aware that departures from the show don’t always equate to permanent goodbyes. With speculation running high, the question on everyone’s lips was: will Jake Borelli return? Could Midori Francis revisit her role in the future? I’m always curious about former cast members’ perspectives, and now Martin Henderson has shared his thoughts.
Back in the twelfth season of “Grey’s Anatomy,” I, as Martin Henderson, stepped into the role of Nathan Riggs, who had a romantic history with Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo. However, after some time apart, my character found himself reunited with Army surgeon Megan Hunt, portrayed by Abigail Spencer, when she resurfaced after being missing for ten years. In season 14, Nathan and Megan chose to depart from Seattle to reignite their love story in sunny California. Now, seven years later since we last saw Riggs, I’ve been asked about the possibility of a return to the show. When I spoke with Deadline, here’s what I had to say:
I haven’t had much time to consider it due to being deeply involved with Virgin River and other obligations, as well as everyday life. However, Shonda Rhimes has consistently been supportive of me, and we’ve collaborated on multiple projects. Therefore, if it aligns with what else is happening in my life and career at the moment, I would be open to the opportunity.
Martin Henderson’s acting schedule is brimming, with Season 6 of “Virgin River” now streaming (accessible in its entirety through a Netflix subscription) and a seventh season already announced. Previously, he mentioned that Nathan Riggs was originally envisioned as a temporary character, introduced post-Derek Shepherd’s death to provide a new romantic angle for Meredith. Nevertheless, Henderson leaves the possibility open, provided there’s a compelling storyline for Riggs to return. He added:
As the character seemed underutilized and lacked a clear purpose following Derek’s departure, it appeared as if they added him as a temporary solution, almost like a replacement love interest. If given another chance, I would ensure that his role was more defined and had a well-thought-out plan for his presence in the storyline.
I found it endearing that Meredith and Nathan Riggs formed a strong bond, supporting one another following the untimely deaths of their respective partners. Even today, the thought of Meredith choosing to part ways with Nathan after Megan’s miraculous resurfacing remains incredibly poignant.
The relationship between Megan Hunt and Riggs didn’t survive, as she came back without him in Season 18, revealing they had split during the pandemic. At present, it seems Meredith’s romantic journey has moved on to Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman), suggesting he might be her ultimate love interest. If introduced, Riggs’ storyline could potentially revolve around Megan’s brother Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd). This might offer Owen a fresh direction in the series, helping him divert his attention away from the ongoing drama with his wife, Teddy, and Cass Beckman, portrayed by Sophia Bush.
Martin Henderson can be found in Season 6 of “Virgin River” or you can revisit his episodes on “Grey’s Anatomy” through Netflix streaming. If you prefer, the first 20 seasons of “Grey’s” are also accessible with a Hulu subscription, giving you the opportunity to start rewatching from any of these excellent starting points.
