Art Evans, ‘Die Hard 2’ and ‘A Soldier’s Story’ Actor, Dies at 82

As a gamer who grew up in the golden age of action movies, I have to say that Art Evans was more than just an actor to me. He was a staple of my childhood entertainment, a hero in the truest sense, fighting villains on the silver screen while I battled foes in my virtual worlds.

I’m deeply saddened to share that Art Evans, the remarkable actor who brought Leslie Barnes to life in Die Hard 2, has passed away at the age of 82. It’s hard to express the impact his work had on me and countless other fans.

Evans passed away peacefully in his sleep, with loved ones around him, on December 21st, as confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter by a representative.

As I, a fellow gamer, sadly announce, my beloved partner, Babe Evans, has the unfortunate news that Art, her husband, is no longer with us. In these difficult times, we kindly ask for your understanding and respect for our privacy. A memorial service will be planned for friends and family at a future date, details to follow. Thank you for your compassion.

Leslie Barnes, a character played by Evans, is an air traffic control tower worker who assists Bruce Willis’ character John McClane in thwarting terrorists. Apart from his role in the Die Hard series, Willis also starred with Denzel Washington and Adolph Ceasar in 1984’s A Soldier’s Story, where he portrayed Private James Wilkie.

Throughout his professional journey, Evans accumulated over 120 acting credits. In addition to these, you may recognize him from movies like “Christine”, “Big Time”, “Youngblood”, “National Lampoon’s Class Reunion”, “Fright Night”, “School Daze”, “Bitter Harvest”, “Tales from the Hood” and “Metro”. In 1983, he made his first credited appearance in the movie “Christine”, portraying one of the early victims of the menacing title car.

On the small screen, Evans is often seen in episodes of shows like M*A*S*H, Hill Street Blues, Monk, The X-Files, Family Matters, and A Different World. In these series, he portrayed Mr. Johnson, the father of Ron Johnson (played by Darryl M. Bell).

Lately, Evans has been featured in “Anderson’s Cross” (2010), “Last Man Standing” (2011), and “Real Husbands of Hollywood”.

Art Evans was born on March 27, 1942, right here in Berkeley, California. His 40-year acting career kicked off at Frank Silvera’s Theater of Being in his hometown, where he landed a leading role in The Amen Corner. This production later moved to Broadway in 1965.

Beyond his wife, Evans is also mourned by his son, Ogadae. Tragically, he was gone before him, their son Sage, who passed away in 2016.
