James Gunn Shares Why ‘Supergirl’ Is Next for DCU

James Gunn Shares Why 'Supergirl' Is Next for DCU

As a lifelong comic book aficionado who has been following the DC Universe since the days of Superman’s debut, I am thrilled to see the direction James Gunn is taking the DCU films. The decision to make “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” the second film in the DCU lineup, after “Superman,” is a bold move that speaks volumes about the quality of Ana Nogueira’s script and Craig Gillespie’s directorial vision.

Despite the recent buzz surrounding Superman’s latest trailer, his cousin is poised to take center stage with “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”, slated for release approximately a year later. This upcoming film, directed by Craig Gillespie (of “I, Tonya” fame), will see Milly Alcock (from “House of the Dragon”) portray Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin. Contrary to some expectations, it appears that James Gunn has chosen not to delay “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” in relation to Superman, suggesting that Kryptonians could spearhead the DC Universe’s cinematic adventures.

Initially, Gunn hadn’t intended for “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” to be the second DCU film. In an interview with The Omelet (translated by CBR), Gunn shared that it was Ana Nogueira’s script that ultimately swayed him to pursue “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” instead of other projects like “Swamp Thing”, “The Authority”, or “The Brave and the Bold”, all of which are still in development. Gunn also expressed admiration for Craig Gillespie, and with everything falling into place, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” became the ideal film to follow “Superman”. Gunn stated:

Although it wasn’t initially clear that ‘Supergirl’ would be our next film, Ana Nogueira crafted an outstanding screenplay. This led us to hire a fantastic director for the project. Given his excellence, we decided to produce ‘Supergirl’ after ‘Superman’, making it our subsequent production.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based on a 2021-2022 miniseries with the same title, penned by writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. In this narrative, Supergirl embarks on an epic, interstellar tale reminiscent of True Grit, where she’s hired to track down a ruthless alien who murdered a young girl named Ruthye’s father. Actress Eve Ridley will portray Ruthye, while Matthias Schoenaerts assumes the role of the antagonist, Krem from the Yellow Hills. Principal photography for the film is scheduled to commence in January 2025 in the United Kingdom.

DC Studios’ Slate Is Evolving

James Gunn’s opinions regarding Supergirl, coupled with his admission that he didn’t initially intend to create a Clayface film until Mike Flanagan pitched it to him, illustrates the flexibility of the DC Universe compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The DC Universe seems more adaptable in terms of introducing new projects and rearranging existing ones, whereas altering the MCU’s slate can sometimes trigger a chain reaction.

Many people are speculating if “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” will indeed be the next DC Studios film due to an unnamed DC movie scheduled for release on May 29, 2026 – a month before “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” hits theaters. Since no films are in production at this time, it’s possible that the May 2026 date is just a placeholder unless director Gunn reveals an unexpected movie project he has managed to keep hidden.

2026 promises to be a significant year for DC even without the unknown movie. Following the release of “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”, we have “Clayface” scheduled for September 11th. Meanwhile, “The Batman – Part II” is set to hit theaters on October 2nd, 2026. After “Creature Commandos” and the debut of the “Superman” trailer, it’s clear that the DC Universe is gearing up for a strong start.
