As a connoisseur of both timepieces and Japanese art, I must say that Grand Seiko has outdone themselves yet again with the SBGJ283 “Washi Paper” limited-edition watch. Having traveled extensively throughout Japan, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the intricate process of Washi paper production firsthand. To see this art form beautifully translated onto a timepiece dial is truly a sight to behold.
Grand Seiko has introduced the SBGJ283, a unique and limited-edition watch affectionately known as “Washi Paper.” Just like its name implies, this timepiece is inspired by the ancient craft of making Japanese Washi paper, furthering the watchmaker’s dedication to honoring traditional Japanese artisanal skills.
Just as I’ve admired the artistic concepts behind previous 44GS watches, the latest addition to my collection features a beautifully crafted dial that embodies its inspiration in a stunning way. The SBGJ283’s dial gleams in a soft off-white, replicating the delicate textures of traditional Washi paper. To make it even more captivating, it subtly shimmers with a charming sheen.
150 unique pieces, the SBGJ283 model boasts a 55-hour power reserve and operates using Grand Seiko’s automatic winding mechanism (9386 caliber). The timepiece is encased in a 40mm Ever-Brilliant Steel watch casing, which comes paired with a stainless steel bracelet (three-fold) as well as an extra brown crocodile leather strap.
The SBGJ283 “Washi Paper” watch, priced at approximately 8,116 USD or 11,000 SGD, will be launched by Grand Seiko and certain authorized retailers in the Asia-Pacific region.
