As a seasoned film enthusiast who’s seen more DC movies than I care to count, this new era of DC Studios is like a breath of fresh air. After years of waiting for the DCEU to find its footing, it seems that James Gunn has finally managed to craft a universe that truly embodies the spirit of these iconic characters.
This month has seen a flurry of activity at James Gunn’s DC Studios, with their first animated series, “Creature Commandos,” premiering and the first trailer for “Superman” unveiled – marking the big-screen debut of the DCU. As the revamped DC Universe starts to materialize, fans are abuzz with speculation about which superheroes will inhabit this new cinematic world. The fourth episode of “Creature Commandos” has offered a sneak peek at several characters such as Wonder Woman, Batman, Robin, and others. It’s now been confirmed that a swift character did indeed make an appearance in the previously mentioned sequence, but no, it wasn’t The Flash (Barry Allen).
In the fourth episode’s apocalyptic scene as depicted by Circe, a sequence of defeated DC superheroes is shown under Gorilla Grodd’s rule over the world. Some observant viewers noticed an injured figure resembling the Flash, specifically his Teen Titans persona. In an interview with The Direct, the showrunner of Creature Commandos, Dean Lorey, revealed that the Flash wearing the Teen Titans costume does make an appearance in the series, which is Wally West. However, he remains uncertain if this suggests the path the DC Universe will take concerning the Flash. His statement: “Wally West’s Flash does appear in the show wearing his Teen Titans suit, but I am unsure if this indicates the direction the DCU is heading with the Flash.
“It was a lot of fun. We spent a lot of time on that sequence, as you might guess. I don’t know that it’s representative, necessarily, of anything that James [Gunn] has planned in the DCU outside of the show, just because I simply don’t know… “
Despite the showrunner of the Creature Commandos appearing unphased by significant cameos, it’s rarely a coincidence what Gunn includes in his projects. The scene envisioned by Circe featured the primary trio of heroes – Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman – along with less popular characters such as Booster Gold, Supergirl, Hawkgirl, and Captain Atom. Including Kid Flash, played by Ezra Miller in the 2023 film The Flash, in this context might not be accidental, considering a Teen Titans movie is confirmed to be in development. Given that the DCU seems to be focusing on characters who weren’t prominent or even appeared in the old DCEU, it’s clear that Wally West is one of them. This suggests that the DCU may be venturing into a completely new direction with Barry Allen.
A New Era of DC Movies is Upon Us
With “Creature Commandos” streaming on Max and the trailer for “Superman” smashing records, the foundation for DC Universe’s success is being laid. While there’s still a long road ahead to cement its new cinematic universe, DC Studios is working diligently to get their upcoming movies off the ground.
Although I didn’t have it specifically planned that Supergirl would be our second film, Ana [Nogueira] wrote such a fantastic script that it caught our attention. We then brought on an exceptional director for the project. Since Superman turned out to be the best choice, we decided to make the movie after him.
Significant progress has been made for a solo Clayface film, penned by horror master Mike Flanagan. This may surprise many as it’s not common knowledge that the third DC Universe movie would focus on Batman’s villain. Even James Gunn shares this sentiment. However, with a highly praised first draft and an even better second one, DC Studios felt confident enough to set a tentative filming schedule and release date for Clayface. A director for Clayface is yet to be found, but it’s anticipated that the film will follow Supergirl in production. It appears that the upcoming DC films are heavily relying on well-written, completed scripts so far, and fans eagerly await what’s coming after Superman hopefully delivers in summer 2025.
