‘It Just Felt So Disrespectful.’ Grey’s Anatomy’s Adelaide Kane Discusses The Midseason Finale Scene That Made Her Feel ‘Very Uncomfortable’

As a seasoned film critic who has witnessed the highs and lows of medical dramas, I must say that the emotional rollercoaster ride that is Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 has left me breathless. Adelaide Kane truly delivered an exceptional performance, especially in the heated exchange between Jules and Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson).

In the early stages of Grey’s Anatomy Season 21, Jules Millin experienced an emotional rollercoaster. Her budding romance with Mika Yasuda took a back seat for a while, but they eventually shared a night together in the midseason finale. However, the very next day, Mika declared she was leaving the hospital. Interestingly, when actress Adelaide Kane discusses her discomfort regarding “Drop It Like It’s Hot” (which can be streamed with a Hulu subscription), it wasn’t Midori Francis in that scene but Grey’s original cast member, Chandra Wilson, who made her feel uneasy.

When “Grey’s Anatomy” airs again in the 2025 TV lineup, it will be without two original main cast members, Jake Borelli and Midori Francis, who have chosen to depart as previously arranged. Following Mika and Jules’ passionate encounter, Mika informs Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) that she can no longer work in the hospital where her sister Chloe perished, and she resigns immediately. With no other avenue for her anger, Jules lays the blame on Bailey for allowing Mika to leave as if their relationship held no significance. This scene was particularly challenging for Adelaide Kane, who discussed it with Shondaland.

That scene was very uncomfortable for me to shoot because I love [Chandra Wilson] so much. It just felt so disrespectful to be yelling at such an incredible actor who I admire. I apologized a lot [laughs]. I was like, ‘I’m so sorry; I know that my tone is really inappropriate and disrespectful, but I love you, and it’s just acting.’ And she was so kind about it. Chandra’s such an angel.

For several weeks, Jules suppressed all her feelings as Mika navigated Chloe’s cancer, treatment, and ultimately her sad demise. When Jules believed the moment had come for them to move forward, surprisingly, Mika chose to depart entirely. Understandably, Jules couldn’t vent her sorrow onto Mika, so instead, it was Bailey who bore the brunt of her distress.

It’s no wonder that Chandra Wilson was a considerate co-star for Adelaide Kane during that particular scene, as she had found herself in a similar predicament in the Season 21 premiere. The episode “If Walls Could Talk” appeared to continue directly from where Season 20 ended, with Bailey facing off against Catherine Fox, portrayed by Debbie Allen, and eventually slapping her.

Given Debbie Allen’s status not only as an executive producer on Grey’s Anatomy, but also as a true icon in the entertainment world, it’s reasonable why Chandra Wilson might resist such a suggestion. However, Allen persisted, stating, “Catherine needed a firm hand,” and she described shooting that scene as “a real blast.

As Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 continues, Adelaide Kane anticipates that her character will acknowledge their past mistakes.

However, it’s not Bailey’s responsibility to persuade someone to remain, and I believe Jules will realize this when her emotions have cooled down and she is no longer seeking someone to hold accountable.

I’m eagerly awaiting the second half of Season 21, as much for understanding how Jules copes with this traumatic event, but also to see the impact Sophia Bush’s character Cass may have on Teddy and Owen’s relationship, not to mention resolving the cliffhanger involving Lucas and Jo who were last seen in a hostage situation. Tune in at 10 p.m. ET Thursday, March 6, on ABC.
