As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of biblical narratives, I must say that “The Chosen” is nothing short of a revelation. Dallas Jenkins and his team have truly outdone themselves with this magnificent series. The way they weave together the lives of these iconic figures, giving them depth and humanity, is simply breathtaking.
As a devoted fan, I’ve been captivated by an extraordinary independent TV production titled “The Chosen.” If you’re curious about how many seasons this biblical drama has, let me share some fascinating insights. Since its inception in 2017, “The Chosen” has been steadily growing into a global sensation, with translations available in as many as 50 languages (aspiring to reach a total of 600), captivating audiences across the planet. Developed by filmmaker Dallas Jenkins, this series offers a unique perspective on the timeless story of Jesus Christ (portrayed by Jonathan Roumie) by delving into the lives of his twelve disciples and other chosen followers.
Exploring both political and religious conflicts, “The Chosen” stands out as a distinctive historical drama, drawing heavily from the New Testament. Although it may not always strictly adhere to the biblical narrative (similar to Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ,” which included scenes not found in the Bible), “The Chosen” presents an alternative perspective on the tale of Jesus Christ. This captivating drama can be streamed on multiple platforms, with some episodes even airing on television via The CW. Distributed by Lionsgate, the series has produced several seasons since its initial release, and with additional stories in development leading up to Christ’s Crucifixion, audiences are left pondering where the series will head next. Here is a list of all the seasons that have been released thus far.
Season 1 (2019)
As a devoted fan, I’d like to share that my journey with “The Chosen” started back in 2017, when a heartwarming Christmas short film titled “The Shepherd” was released. This story beautifully portrayed Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem and served as a precursor to the series, though it technically fell outside of the first season.
Matthew decides to stop working for the Roman tax collectors and leaves behind his old identity. In contrast, Mary discards her former persona as “Lilith” and expels her figurative demons. However, Nicodemus chooses not to fully embrace this enigmatic Messiah and instead returns to his previous life. The show also introduces several of Jesus’ disciples, including Thomas (Joey Vahedi), John (George H. Xanthis), Andrew, Simon’s brother (Noah James), and Thaddeus (Giavani Cairo), each with their distinct abilities (and past transgressions). As they progress, they witness the stirring of controversy due to Jesus’ unique teachings. In the Season 1 finale titled “I Am He,” Jesus commences his public ministry by revealing himself as the Messiah to a woman in Samaria (Vanessa DeSilvio).
Season 2 (2021)
In April 2021, “The Chosen” Season 2 resumes, carrying on directly from where the first season ended. Jesus and his disciples embark on a journey through Samaria, eventually expanding to Syria and Judea as well. This marks the commencement of Jesus’ ministry. Incredible feats unfold as Jesus journeys across the Middle East, simultaneously instructing his disciples on how to perform similar miracles. However, internal disputes among the disciples persist. After Jesus calls Philip (Yoshi Barrigas), Nathaniel (Austin Reed Alleman), and Simon the Zealot (Alaa Safi), it becomes evident that the disciples are not in perfect harmony. Conflict arises among Jesus’ followers, particularly between Simon Peter and Matthew, as they grapple with their own differences following Matthew’s labeling as a traitor by some Jewish people. Although this matter isn’t fully resolved in this season, the groundwork is laid for future reconciliation.
Throughout most of the season, Jesus works on his renowned Sermon on the Mount, which Matthew assists him in delivering. In the Season 2 finale titled “Beyond Mountains,” multitudes gather to hear this new public speaker, Israel’s preacher. While the season focuses largely on Jesus’ increasing fame and the spiritual and ethical teachings he shares with his followers, it concludes by introducing Judas Iscariot (played by Luke Dimyan) into the cast. Although we know how Judas’ tale unfolds eventually, this portrayal shows a younger, more hopeful character who soon earns the respect of the disciples.
Season 3 (2022-2023)
Prior to Season 3 of the series “The Chosen,” we were gifted a Christmas special titled “The Messengers” on December 1, 2021. This special expanded upon the Nativity story introduced in “The Shepherd,” offering Mary and Joseph’s perspective on Jesus’ birth. Approximately a year and a half later, Season 3 was released on December 11, 2022. The narrative resumes with Jesus starting to preach to large crowds. In this season, Jesus gains notoriety throughout Judea, causing both the Romans and Pharisees to become wary of him. He sends his disciples out in pairs across the region, and they spread his teachings, perform miracles, and exorcise demons in His name, angering many religious leaders.
The storyline becomes more intricate for Simon Peter during this season, following the unfortunate event of a miscarriage experienced by his wife, Eden (Lara Silva), while he was away. This heart-wrenching incident leaves him struggling to comprehend its implications. In his sorrow, he forms a connection with Roman centurion Gaius (Kirk B. R. Woller), who also opens up about his personal struggles. The narrative reaches its climax towards the end of the season: In the final episode titled “Sustenance,” Jesus delivers food to thousands who had gathered to listen to his teachings, then sends his disciples away in a boat. As they encounter a violent storm on the Sea of Galilee, they spot their master walking on water, prompting Simon Peter to venture out and seek solace in his grief from him.
Season 4 (2024)
In June 2024, Season 4 of “The Chosen” commenced. The narrative unfolds following the demise of John the Baptist, a prophet and cousin of Jesus (portrayed by David Amito), an event deeply affecting Jesus. This season delves into the last year of Jesus’ public ministry. After curing a blind man and foretelling his own death and resurrection, Jesus and his followers journey through Judea, encountering growing persecution and opposition from the Romans (incited by the Pharisees). Regrettably, another tragedy befalls them when Thomas’ fiancĂ©e Ramah (Yasmine Al-Bustami) is slain during a riot, causing Thomas to grapple with a faith crisis.
In the concluding episodes, titled “The Last Sign” and “Humble,” I found myself utterly captivated as Jesus brings back his friend Lazarus (Demetrios Troy) from the cold embrace of death. This miracle left me, as Thomas, feeling bewildered and even a tad enraged. I wished it was Ramah or John the Baptist who were resurrected instead. Yet, Jesus gently reminds us that God’s plan isn’t always in sync with our desires, and we must have faith that things unfold as they should. However, Lazarus’ return from the dead seemed to be the final nail in the coffin for the Pharisees, who now plotted to end Jesus’ life. As we draw nearer to this fateful event, Jesus and his disciples make their way into Jerusalem during Passover week, and it feels like the end is upon us.
There will be seven seasons of The Chosen
Dallas Jenkins has a total of seven seasons planned for “The Chosen.” Given its relevance in the biblical storyline, this arrangement seems fitting. If the series maintains its current path alongside the New Testament, Season 5 is expected to depict Jesus’ last week before His Crucifixion. Notably, upcoming trailers hint that the Last Supper event and Judas Iscariot’s betrayal of Jesus will be featured in Season 5. This implies that the Crucifixion will unfold in Season 6, with Season 7 delving into the disciples’ responses to their teacher’s demise, including the Resurrection and the beginning of the Book of Acts. Each season will encompass eight episodes.
In 2024, Jenkins shared some exciting news about “The Chosen” – I, as a devoted fan, won’t be able to journey too deep into the Book of Acts at the end of Season 7, but let me tell you, I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to carry on narrating the captivating tale of the church’s inception and the most monumental event in history. Regarding when we can expect “The Chosen” to return for its fifth season (feel free to catch up on all episodes in the meantime), Jenkins has confirmed that Season 5, titled “Last Supper,” will premiere in three parts over a four-week run in theaters starting March 27, 2025. This initial release will coincide with the Easter holiday, and later in the year, the entire season will transition to streaming platforms.
The Chosen has launched a Biblical Universe
The series ‘The Chosen’ occasionally employs flashback sequences to depict individuals and occurrences from the Old Testament. Characters such as King David (Jorge Franco IV), Moses (Stelio Savante), Jacob (Amato D’Apolito), Bathsheba (Moriah Smallbone), and many others have made appearances at different times. Interestingly, it appears that this series may be setting the stage for a grand cinematic Biblical Universe, one that could outshine any other Bible-themed movies. This was hinted at during ChosenCon in 2024, suggesting that the franchise will expand to include more projects in the future.
A narrative about Moses’ life across three different periods is currently being developed, similar to how ‘The Chosen’ explores the question of what it might have been like to encounter Jesus and either follow or oppose Him. In the same vein, Jenkins shared with Variety that this Moses story raises the very same intriguing query. Moreover, Jenkins and 5&2 Studios are planning a limited series titled “Joseph” focusing on the biblical character from Genesis. As Jenkins stated, “This story can be effectively conveyed in eight episodes.
In addition, there’s a follow-up series for “The Chosen,” titled “Acts of the Apostles.” There’s also an animated series called “The Chosen Adventures,” which will focus on Jesus teaching younger children about divine love, starring Paul Walter Hauser and Yvonne Orji as voice actors. Moreover, a six-episode adventure series named “The Chosen in the Wild with Bear Grylls” is planned for the future, meaning there’s a lot of exciting “Chosen” content to look forward to in the upcoming years.
